Royal visits to East Riding of Yorkshire Henry IV visited Beverley in 1408 and 1410 Henry V visited Beverley in 1420 Henry VI visited Beverley in 1448 In 1642 Charles I made his HQ in Beverley before returning to York as it was apparent that Hull was too strongly defended. On 16th August 1881 the HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh paid Hornsea a visit from the yacht The Lively, to inspect new cottage buildings for the coastguards opposite the Congregational Church. A brass band was provided & decorations on Hornsea Pier for the occasion. The Duke inspected the coastguards' cottages. Visits to Beverley Minster: 1905 King Edward II, 1934 Queen Mary, 1950 The Queen then Princess Elizabeth, 1960 The Queen Mother. On 1st August 1940 the King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth visited Hornsea while on a morale boosting tour which had already taken in Scunthorpe and Hull. This was the first royal visit to Hornsea since 1881. For security reasons local officials were given minimum notice, although a crowd was able to gather near the sea front, where an area in front of the Marine Hotel had been cordoned off. There the King presented the British Empire Medal for Meritorious Service to Mrs Evelyn Cardwell of East Carlton, Aldbrough who on 8th July, had apprehended and disarmed an enemy airman who had parachuted from a stricken bomber, which crashed near Aldbrough. Princess Anne was present for the reopening of Hornsea Floral Hall in 1976, and also visited the Hornsea Potteries. During her jubilee tour the Queen and Philip visited Beverley on 13th July 1977. Princess Anne opened new alms-houses in New Walkergate on 16th May 1979 and also visited the Humberside County Show on 18th May. In September 1988 Princess Diana came to Beverley Westwood Hospital to open a new Maternity wing. HRH the Princess Royal's last visit to Hornsea was in 1996 when she opened the Leisure Centre and also met some of the crew of Hornsea Inshore Rescue. During her Golden Jubilee the Queen attended a service at Beverley Minster and visited the Racecourse on 12th July 2002. Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal, officially opened the Hornsea Rescue Boathouse on 14th December 2010. HRH met fund-raisers and trustees as well as speaking individually to all the crew members. The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening, signed the Visitors Book and was presented with a posy of flowers by ten year old Emily, daughter of Coxswain Neville Metcalf. Coxswain Sue Hickson-Marsay, made a short speech and introduced everyone to HRH and the other dignitaries present, including the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding Susan Cunliffe-Lister and the Chairman of ERYC, Cllr David Rudd. Charles and Camilla visited Burton Fleming, Bridlington and Withernsea on 23rd July 2013, Camilla famously eating fish and chips at Bridlington. The Countess of Wessex came to Driffield on 25th March 2015 to open a new facility at the town`s showground at Kelleythorpe. .
