LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION Commemorating the 100Th Anniversary of the Begin- Ning of the Restoration of Fort Ticonderoga

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the begin- ning of the restoration of Fort Ticonderoga WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the efforts of those organizations and individuals which seek to bring recognition to historical places within the State of New York to ensure that the complete history of our State and Nation is preserved and shared with present generations of citizens; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long- standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem- orate the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of the restoration of Fort Ticonderoga; and WHEREAS, In 1820, William Ferris Pell and his family made the first commitment, public or private in this country, to historic preservation when they acquired the Garrison Grounds and ruins of Fort Ticonderoga from Union College and Columbia University; and WHEREAS, Six years later, William Ferris Pell built The Pavilion on the shore of Lake Champlain, in the shadow of Fort Ticonderoga; since that time, the two structures have been dual-stars in a preservation-e- ducation orbit around each other; and WHEREAS, In 1909, Stephen and Sarah Pell, with the help of English architect Alfred Bossom, invented the fundamental principles and tech- niques of historic preservation at Fort Ticonderoga; and WHEREAS, The restoration of Fort Ticonderoga was showcased on July 6, 1909, when President William Howard Taft was among the dignitaries on hand to commemorate the 300th Anniversary of Samuel de Champlain's exploration of the lake in 1609; and WHEREAS, One of the first named National Historic Landmarks, Fort Ticonderoga restored the last missing piece of the skyline, the magasin du Roi, in 2008, thanks to the generosity of Deborah and Forrest Mars; and WHEREAS, To mark the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of the resto- ration of Fort Ticonderoga, a series of events will be held July 24-25, 2009, featuring a concert by Atlantic Crossing and festivities for the entire family in both the Fort and the King's Garden; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to express its highest admiration for all of the individuals who have worked to bring proper attention to a place and time which merits recog- nition in the grand panorama of the history of our State and Nation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of the restoration of Fort Ticonderoga; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- smitted to Fort Ticonderoga..
