Agnese, F Borromini, 1652-, and i Tre Fiumi, Giovani Lorenzo Bernini, c1650 • Urban legend has it that one of Bernini’s personifications in the Fountain holds his hand up as if protecting himself from the imminent collapse of the façade of S. Agnese. While the relationship between Borromini and Bernini was tense, the fountain was completed before the façade so the apparent gesture was not intentional. See Baroque III, below, to see the real tectonic tension between the two.
