This season is no different, and fans are all abuzz, talking about the new television stars in Condorstown. I’m talking, of course, about the ducks. The duck-theme, relating the Condors to their new NHL af- fi liate in Anaheim, runs throughout the four new spots this season: Matt Caruana feeding the ducks around a pond and then leading them off to practice, a Condors player thwarting a hunter’s efforts on a duck hunt, and two brand-new spots that feature live ducks both in the Condors offi ce and get- ting off the team bus. “I thought, ‘Oh, no. What is going on?’” said Head Coach Marty Raymond, upon arriving in the offi ce for his appointed video shoot and seeing three live ducks in the lobby. But it was old hat to Marty and Condors Ticket Rep Bill Allison, the stars of the ‘offi ce’ spot. “I studied broadcasting and journalism in college and we made plenty of commercials there,” said Marty. “And Bill was phenomenal. I think his next step is General Hospital, or maybe even Days Of Our Lives.” It wasn’t easy to get the ducks to march on cue, but it was nothing that a little creative editing and some off-camera coaxing couldn’t overcome. And one of them may or may not have left a “sur- prise” on the carpet… which may or may not have later been cleaned up by Team President Mat- thew Riley. The bus spot stars three Condors – Martin Frechette, Chris Kaufman and Thomas Morrow, and used the team’s offi cial bus company, Classic Charter, who is based out of Visalia. The players get off the bus, followed by a pair of ducks, and the commercial was shot behind Rabobank Arena. After the commercial footage was done, the hard part started. Monte Wilson, the videographer/edi- tor from Eye Street Productions had the unique task of getting one of the ducks on fi lm “quacking”, so that he could later edit in a “Go Condors!” voiceover, made especially for the spots. “Monte’s a pro,” said Condors VP of Communications Kevin Bartl, who oversaw the fi lming for both. “Sometimes we had to try to bait the ducks with food, sometimes we had to chase them a little to get them to move, and sometimes we just had to wait for them to do something. But no matter what, Monte had to be recording, because if you missed your shot, you might not get another.” A special thanks goes out to all who made the shoots possible, including Classic Charter and the California Living Museum (CALM) as well, where both the Caruana and the hunting commercials were fi lmed. And of course, a huge thanks to Tammy and her ducks – the real stars of the show!
