Henderson, LL.D ................ 1884 • ANNALS OF THE BISHOPS. The first bishop of Carlisle was Athelwald or .lEthelwulf. He had been prior of St. Oswald's or Nostell's, a house of regular canons of St. Augustine, in • Yorkshire, and had been appointed by Henry I., the first prior of the house of regular canons of St. Augustine, founded by that monarch at Carlisle. This see of Carlisle was created at the instigation of Thurstan, archbishop of York and the chief thing on record of the first bishop of Carlisle, is that he confirmed to the Benedictine house of St. Mary's, York, the churches of Wetheral and War­ wick; St. Michael and St. Lawrence, Appleby; Kirkby Stephen, Ormside, Morland, Cliburn, Bromfield, Croglin, and the hermitage of St. Andrews, Kirk· land, which had been given to St. Mary's by various benefactors, and which remained in possession of that house or its dependencies until its dissolution. Bishop lEthelwulf died in 1155, having bee!! 54 years, first prior and \hen bishop of Carlisle. The Scots overran the see, and it was practically vacant for more than 60 years. The county historians speak of a Bishop Bernard, whom they assert to have consecrated the church of Lanercost Priory in 1169; that ceremony was, however, performed by Christian, bishop of Candida Casa or Whitherne; during this long interval, the bishopric was granted to various persons, such as the archbishop of Ragusa, Benedict de Ramsay, whom Innocent Ill. nominated in 1205, but they could not enter the see, and, probably, derived little pecuniary .
