It has a total surface of 5.831 square kilometres which means that it is one of the smaller provinces of Turkey (ranked 59 th out of 81 provinces regarding surface) – it is further subdivided into nine districts (Merkez, Ayancık, Boyabat, Dikmen, Durağan, Erfelek, Gerze, Saraydüzü and Türkeli). With approximately 205.000 inhabitants (latest official estimation in 2014) it is not very populated in comparison to other Turkish provinces (ranked 73 rd regarding inhabitants) – Hatay Province, which is comparable regarding surface (5.831 square kilometres) has currently a population of 1,5 million. The largest city is the capital Sinop with approximately 38.000 registered inhabitants – this is a relatively small number in comparison to other cities at the Turkish Black Sea coast (like Samsun or Trabzon). The preparation of the Tourism Master Plan for Sinop Province is one of the elements of the EU-financed project “Technical Assistance for Common Cultural Heritage: Preservation and Dialogue between Turkey and the EU (Phase- I)” which will mainly focus on Sinop Old Fortress. The project is led by Wehdorn Architekten from Vienna (Austria) in cooperation with the Technical University Vienna (Austria), Ankey Consulting (Turkey), CBBS (Croatia) and Nuran Demirtas (Turkey). Kohl & Partner is subcontracted by the project consortium to determine the development potential for Sinop Fortress from a tourism point of view and to prepare the Tourism Master Plan for Sinop Province. The Tourism Master Plan will consist of three modules (I. Analysis of the current situation – II. Development concept – III. Action plan) identifying the current strengths and weaknesses of tourism in Sinop Province, how to overcome current short-comings and which tourism projects should have the highest priority.
