CHARDSTOCK ST. ANDREWS CHURCH - MARRIAGES Sources: 1579 to 1582 Bishop’s Transcripts held at Wiltshire Record Office 1597 to 1911 Chardstock Parish Registers held at Devon Heritage Centre The transcripts for the period 1597 to 1911 were made by members of Chardstock Historical Record Group (CHRG) and were taken from the originals of the Parish Registers held at the Devon Heritage Centre at Exeter. Scans of these registers are held by CHRG. While every effort has been made to ensure that the transcripts are as accurate as possible, errors can sometimes occur. Should you encounter any problems, please contact us by e-mail [email protected] and we will do our best to help. When using this site the following points should also be borne in mind: Abbreviations have been avoided wherever possible and full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm C. Watts in the register appears as William C Watts in the transcription. This measure is designed to assist word search software programmes. In cases where other research has produced an alternative to the transcribed version, that alternative is shown alongside the transcribed version in [ ] brackets, provided the alternative has an equal or greater likelihood of being the correct or preferred version. TIMELINE The earliest entries recorded just the date and names of the bride and groom. Gradually more information was added, sometimes at the behest of the Vicar, but more often as a result of new legislation. 1653 Commonwealth Marriages Act which created the position of Registrar for each parish. He was required to check the names and place of abode of the bride and groom, ensure proper consent of their parents or guardians and arrange for publication of the intended marriage for at least three weeks prior to the ceremony. The marriage then had to be solemnised before a Justice of the Peace. From this date the place of abode of bride and groom was recorded, as were some details of the parents. 1660 Restoration of Charles II. From this date the place of residence of bride and groom continued to be recorded, but additional information regarding parents gradually lapsed. 1752 Britain changed over from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in September, 1752 in order to bring the country into line with Catholic Europe. 11 days were lost between the 3rd and 14th September. 1752. At the same time the official start of the year was changed from 25th March to 1st January. This transcription records marriages between 1st January and 24th March in those years prior to 1752 as, for example, 12.3.1661/2. The first year (1661) is the date under the Julian or Old Style calendar and the second (1662) that under the Gregorian or New Style calendar 1754 Hardwicke's Marriage Act (1753) which became Law on 25th March, 1754. Also known as “An Act for the Better Prevention of Clandestine Marriage”. it was the first statutory legislation in England and Wales to require a formal ceremony of marriage. Marriages had to be witnessed and the witnesses names and signatures were recorded in the Register. Also, information was generally recorded on the status and occupation of the bride and groom. 1813 George Rose's Act (1812) which became Law on 1st January, 1813 stipulated that all registers had to be pre-printed with standardised layout and content. From this date, the amount of information recorded increased considerably CHARDSTOCK ST.
