Duy Vu Editor's Note This story has been updated with current information. The Dallas Wings (14-12) made a 24-point comeback only to come up short in the end, losing 92-91 to the Chicago Sky (10-17) on Tuesday night at College Park Center. After an eight-day break for the All-Star game, the Wings showed signs of rust in the first half of the game against the Sky. “I appreciate our effort, how well we fought back and battled being down by 24,” head coach Fred Williams said. “We just got to, you know, play a better first half versus what we did today.” The first quarter started off strong for center Liz Cambage, who scored seven of Dallas’ first eight points, taking the early 8-7 lead. Chicago responded with a 12-0 run to take a 20-8 lead, forcing Dallas to readjust and bring in their newly acquired player, guard Tayler Hill, off the bench. At the end of the first, Chicago held a 28-15 advantage after shooting 64.7 percent from the field. The Sky continued with the pressure in the second quarter, shooting 58.8 percent compared to the Wings' 27.8 percent from the field. The Sky led by as much as 24 points before ending the half ahead 55-36. Dallas shot 1-15 from the three-point line in the first half and 11-36 from the field. Cambage led the team with 12 points and forward Glory Johnson led with 10 rebounds at the break. Point guard Skylar Diggins-Smith missed most of the second quarter after taking a hit to the chin. She returned in the third quarter. It would be the tale of two halves as Dallas came out in the third quarter firing on all cylinders. “We had some opportunities and shots in the first half, didn’t fall and defensively we just really didn’t come to play that first half,” Williams said. The duo of Cambage and Diggins-Smith would light up the scoreboard and the crowd. The third quarter began with an and-1 running layup by Diggins-Smith and ended with a putback layup by guard Allisha Gray to knot the game at 72. Dallas outscored Chicago 36-17 in the third. With the help of 16 points from Cambage and eight points from Diggins-Smith, Dallas overcame a 19-point deficit. The fourth quarter was neck and neck, with both teams fighting for every point. Cambage picked up her seventh technical foul of the season, giving Chicago a small advantage. According to WNBA Rules, a player is automatically suspended for one game after receiving seven technical fouls during the regular season. Cambage's technical foul was rescinded by the league on Wednesday, allowing her to play in Thursday's game against the Indiana Fever and putting her back at six technical fouls for the season. Dallas had the ball with 0:05 left in the quarter, trailing 92-91, when a bad pass by Diggins-Smith gave Chicago the turnover and the win. “At half time they responded with some aggressive defense, got ourselves back in it,” Williams said. “The game could have gone either way in the last few seconds.” Allisha Gray fell two rebounds short of a triple-double as she picked up 12 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Johnson and Cambage also recorded double-doubles as Johnson collected 11 points and 14 rebounds while Cambage snagged 33 points and 13 rebounds. The Wings return home to face the Washington Mystics at 3 p.m. on Sunday at College Park Center. @edwarddcardenas [email protected] Eduardo Cardenas.
