Discover all the “Wal- lonia Quality Destination” certified institutions at www.walloniaquality.be THE FOUR MAJOR MINING SITES IN WALLONIA RECOGNIZED BY UNESCO AS A WORLD HERITAGE SITE On 1st July 2012, Wallonia’s four major mining sites, Le Grand Hornu near Mons, Bois-du-Luc at La Louvière, Le Bois du Cazier at Charleroi, and Blegny-Mine, joined the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites. This ultimate accolade, which was awarded to our neighbours in the Nord-Pas-de Calais mining basin in France at the same time, is a recognition of the hard lives of the miners and all those involved in the technical and human saga of coal-mining in our regions. Their work laid the foundations for our life styles, our landscapes, and the whole of our society; it created a richly multicultural environment, and raised our standard of living to a level previously enjoyed by few. It is essential to pass down this memory to BOIS-DU-LUC the present and future generations. The mine can be visited by anyone with a minimum height of 1 meter. The underground tour has been adapted to make the visit easy. The only difficulty consists of two flights of stairs, one of 130 steps and one of 60 steps. Furthermore, an adapted version of the tour for wheelchairs can be arranged subject to prior notice. The temperature underground is about 15°C. Jackets and helmets will be supplied. N.B.: The guide is included in the tour price. If you want to have a guide exclusively for your group, there will be an additional charge of 53 € per guide (please specify when booking). Our tips for seniors groups : If any members of your group prefer not to go down the mine (claustrophobia, difficulty with steps, etc.), this visit may be replaced by the tour of the permanent exhibition (free visit or guided if min. 15 pers.).
