Astro began operating in South Gate in 1967 and remains today a family-owned and operated business. The City Council wishes to formally recognize Astro for contributing to the economic well-being of the City and demonstrating commitment to the vitality of South Gate’s business climate, for being an annual sponsor of many City events including the Pageant of the Trees, Police Department’s Baker to Vegas Fundraiser and for being a major employer in the City — 170 employees. FISCAL IMPACT: None ANALYSIS: None BACKGROUND: The Los Angeles Marathon, known as the “Stadium to the Sea”, is a 26.2-mile race which began at Dodger Stadium at 6:55a.m., went through West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and ended in Santa Monica. On Sunday, March 19, 2017, over 24,000 athletes from all 50 states and more than 63 countries participated and a total of 18,918 completed the Los Angeles Marathon. As in years past, the City Council would like to recognize the students from South Gate Middle School; South Gate High School; Southeast Middle School; South East High School; International Middle School; International Studies Learning Center; Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) High School; Visual And Performing Arts (VAPA) High School; and Odyssey High School who completed the Los Angeles Marathon.
