The previous standard for close ones was Alberto Juantorena’s 4-point margin over Edwin Moses in ’77. The 23-year old world champ moved to =No. 4 all-time with his 7-10¾ (2.41) best. It was height he cleared twice in becoming the first in his event ever to win our men’s AOY honor. Jehue Gordon 3. -640- December 30, 2013 — Valerie Adams Defends Women’s AOY Title — Last year here we said, “Field eventers in general and throwers in particular have a tough time getting elected as Athlete Of The Year, but New Zealand shot star Valerie Adams turned the trick in the Olympic year, becoming the first since East Germany’s Ilona Slupianek in ’80.” Now she’s the first from her event ever to win in back-to-back years in scoring a solid win over Jamaican sprint star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The undefeated Kiwi won all 12 of her meets as she completely dominated her event, producing at least the 25 farthest throws of the year.
