Steve Miller's career has encompassed two distinct stages: one of the top San Francisco blues-rockers during the late '60s and early '70s, and one of the top-selling pop/rock acts of the mid- to late '70s and early '80s with hits like The Joker, Fly Like an Eagle, Take the Money and Run, and Jet Airliner. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1943, Steve Miller received his first guitar at age 4. Miller was turned on to music by his father, who worked as a pathologist, but knew stars like Charles Mingus and Les Paul, whom he brought home as guests. Paul taught the young Miller some guitar chords and let him sit in on a music session. At age 12, he formed a blues band, the Marksmen Combo, with friend Boz Scaggs. Steve Miller’s early style in the 60s as a blues-rocker allowed him to remain a popular artist, with a series of high quality albums and fans. Tracks like “Space Cowboy” and “Brave New World” had become rock staple, but pop radio failed to pick up any of his material. Things began to look even worse for Miller when he broke his neck in a car accident and developed hepatitis, putting him out of commission for most of 1972 and 1973. Miller spent his recuperation time reinventing himself as a blues-influenced pop/rocker, writing songs that sold millions of copies and brought instant success. The Joker album in 1973 went platinum, and the title track was his first number one hit on the pop charts. “Rock’n Me” was close behind as his second number one. Fly Like an Eagle (over four million copies sold) and Book of Dreams (over three million copies sold) albums were released around the same time in 1976 and produced several hits as well. The title track “Abracadabra” gave Miller his third number one single in the early 80s. Two decades later, Steve Miller has continued to headline shows into the 2000s and has recently announced the impending release of a new studio album of R&B covers.
