Scholars, researchers,and others interested in(,,the development of reading gather to shareideas and research. Throughout the years NRC has providedyearbooks which have given the profession summaries of research that can be usedby the researcher, the teacher, and the student of reading. This.year theERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills has collaborated with NRC in producing the yearbook for NRC's ,membersand the prof es sio n . ERIC, the Educational Reso.irces Information Center, was originally conceivein the U.S. Office o' Education in the mid-I 960s as a system for provi g ready access to educational literature. ERICi$ now a part of the Na 'onal Institute of Education (NIE) and, through its sixteen specializedclearinghouses,performsthreemajorfunctions:(1) acq isitio cluding evaluation', indexing, and storage for computer ret ievatof recent documentsoh education; (2)dissemination, of these 'do uments throughtheERIC DocumentReproductionService ( RS),andinformationabout;herdthroughtheperiodicals R sources in Education! and Cdtrent Index to Journals inEducation; a (3) information analysis, activities designed to make the findingsof research and the practices of teachers or school districtsavailable and intelligible to teachers and applicable to their classrooms: It is with this last goal in mind that ERIC/RCS is pleased towork with the National Reading Conference in disseminatingtheir 1975 Yearbook. The purpose of the Yearbook is to provide for thosewho attended the conference a selected record of the thoughts andideas that they encountered there and, for those who did not attend, abetter understanding of the many complicated facets of the reading process. The Yearbook includes a summary of the research inreading that has been conducte.in recent years, but also contains manystimulating ideas that hive practical implications for the teacher in theclassroom.
