It led to the Panthers being picked fifth in the league, and expec- tations externally being tempered. Four months later, UWM was celebrating a league crown thanks to excellent player development, the arrival of some key new- comers and stellar execution down the stretch. Will history repeat itself in 2011-12? The Panthers will be seeking to replace their top two scorers in Anthony Hill and Tone Boyle. And, Milwaukee has been picked to finish fourth in the league, behind Butler, Detroit and Cleveland State. But, UWM returns three starters, with Kaylon Williams and Tony Meier both preseason all-league honorees. The group of return- ees also includes players like Kyle Kelm, who looks to make a big jump from his freshman to sophomore season. And, the six- person group of newcomers is expected to make an immediate impact. So, make no mistake, the Panthers very much have their eye on winning the league title. “The good news is people are excited,” head coach Rob Jeter said. “Our team is excited and you could really see that in the spring and the summer, the sense of togetherness and the sense of ac- complishment. But right now it is a new season.” That new season starts with plenty of familiar faces. The most fa- miliar is Tony Meier, a four-year player who started much of the year as a freshman and starts his senior year on pace to surpass 100 career games, 100 career starts, 1,000 career points and pos- sibly 500 career rebounds this season. He has also excelled off the court, earning Division I-AAA Scholar-Athlete honors last spring. “He takes care of business on and off the court,” Jeter said. “He’s an excellent student, an excellent teammate and he has worked hard to make himself an excellent basketball player. I’m excited for Tony. He is becoming more than just a jump-shooter. He’s got- ten bigger. He’s rebounding the ball better. If we can get a little more of a post game for Tony – and I think he’s ready for that – then we’ll have a very special player.” The next returning starter may have been most responsible for the way the Panthers played down the stretch last season. Kaylon Williams came to Milwaukee with high expectations after excel- lent seasons at Evansville and Kirkwood Community College.
