Appendix I Fielding’s Bow Street Clientele, January 3–November 24, 1752 he following tables contain a partial record of the clientele and cases to come before Henry Fielding in the Bow Street Magistrate’s Office be- T tween January 3 and November 24, 1752.The Alpha table sorts persons al- phabetically by surname. The Criminal Activity table sorts crimes alphabetically. The Stolen Property table focuses exclusively on crimes against property and sorts stolen items alphabetically. In the Alpha table, I have included all persons who at least possibly appeared be- fore Fielding. Because of the ambiguous phrasing employed by Brogden—“George Upton was committed to Clerkenwell Bridewell, for stealing several Pewter Pots the Property of Thomas Lucas” (February 17)—it is sometimes impossible to tell whether, in this case for example, the said Thomas Lucas actually appeared in court as an accuser or was merely named by a law officer as the victim. As Beattie notes, private prosecution played a crucial role in the administration of the criminal law: “the pursuit and apprehension of suspects, the gathering of evidence, and the preparation of cases . these matters were left largely to the private initiative of the victim” (35). Nevertheless, agents could and did act for victims, and I remain reluctant automatically to assume their presence in cases such as the one cited above. In all such ambiguous cases, I have included the victim’s name in the table. I have also included the names of murder victims, although obviously the dead would not have physically appeared in court. I have not, however, listed persons whose names appear in secondary descriptions of legal or criminal events not under the jurisdiction of Fielding’s court. Thus, for example, Mary Blandy’s name will not be found in the table, although an incident from her trial is mentioned in the column of March 27. Cross-referencing and certain problems engendered by it are exemplified by the cases of the two Mary Andersons appearing in the Alpha table. The Mary Anderson accused of theft is cross-referenced under “theft” in the Criminal Activity table and under “halfpence” in the Stolen Property table. It seems improbable that she is the Mary Anderson who is the victim/witness in a case of linen theft on May 11.The 150 Henry Fielding at Work second Mary Anderson also appears in the Stolen Property table, bracketed (as a vic- tim) after “linen.”When hard evidence exists that multiple listings refer to the same person, I have simply indicated recurrent dates of appearance in the date column (e.g., the poisoner, Rachael Davis, in the Criminal Activity table). Sometimes, however, even though it is evident that the reference is only to one person I have had to cite the same person twice for crime tabulation purposes. The double listing of Sarah Rock, for example, is based on my inability to prove she is the same woman, although the evidence points to that conclusion. Likewise, I am convinced that Mary “Brown” is a slip by Brogden for Mary Parkington, but again I have been forced by a lack of hard evidence to list both names. In the case of the Halwyn family, the only way to convey the reversal of positions described above was to list Catherine and Thomas Halwyn as being both accused of domestic vio- lence and as being victims of it. I have combined certain crime categories for easier sorting:“idle & disorderly” standardizes a number of different wordings used by Brogden; crimes described as “larceny” have been tabulated as “theft.”The parenthetical inclusion of “pp” after a theft case indicates pickpocketing. Under “unrecorded” in the Alpha table, I have listed only those cases that included particularizing details (e.g., name, occupation, etc.).“Unrecorded” in the Crime table, however, includes all crimes reported.
