Unifor- Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy Internal and External Applications are invited for the Unifor-Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy at Ryerson University. This is a limited term (3 years) appointment as Professor of Distinction, effective July 1, 2016, or earlier by mutual agreement. This endowed Chair was established by the Canadian Autoworkers (now Unifor) in honour of Sam Gindin, who served as director of research for the Canadian Auto Workers union from 1974 until 2000. From 1985 until 2000, he also worked as assistant to the president of the union, providing strategic policy advice. Sam Gindin’s career has been dedicated to the pursuit of social and economic equality and through this Chair, Ryerson University wishes to continue contributing to the evolving debate on achieving democracy and social justice. The University seeks applications from candidates who can provide intellectual leadership fostering interdisciplinary research, teaching and practice in the area of social justice and democracy. For this appointment, the holder of the Chair should have the stature and skills to play a pivotal role in helping to articulate the vision of the Chair, and serving as a catalyst in stimulating debate and dialogue within the University and the broader community. The Chair serves as the centre of a social justice hub that engages academics, students, trade unions, social activists and community members in exploring the parameters of the social justice agenda and developing a transformative vision of a truly democratic society. The Chair’s responsibilities include research, teaching, liaising with staff, faculty, students and external organizations and movements. The Chair will conduct a wide range of activities related to both the scholarly advancement and practice of social justice and democracy, with links throughout Ryerson and with the broader community. The Chair will teach two one semester courses - one in the School of Social Work, Faculty of Community Services, and one in the Department of Politics and Public Administration, Faculty of Arts, each year.
