INTERSTATE MATCHES * In 1879 the VFA and South Australia pioneered interstate matches by playing two intercolonial games in Melbourne, both won by the VFA - 7.10 to 0.0., and 4.8 to 1.6. * VFA - NSW. The first ever encounter between the two states occured in Sydney in 1931 with the VFA winning 16.11 to NSW 13.17. * By joining the Australian National Football Council in 1949 the VFA had to sacrifice the throw pass and the freedom of being able to take players from the VFL without clearances. In return the Association was eligable to play in ANFC Interstate Carnivals. * 1950 VFA plays in ANFC Carnival in Brisbane for the first time. Apart from an eight point win over South Australia, the VFA was well beaten by the VFL, WA and Tasmania. A marked improvement was shown in the 1953 Carnival in Adelaide with the VFA defeating Tasmania and going down by 18 points to SA and 33 points to the VFL. * The VFA won the NFL Shield in 1987 with wins over the ACT, Queensland and . Tasmania.
