I am a strong believer in the 3 BRAND IDENTITY 7 APPAREL DESIGN importance of a design to comMunicate 4 LOGO DESIGN 8 WEB DESIGN and connect with the viewer without always needing words. 5 DIGITAL IMAGES 9 BOOKLET DESIGN PORTFOLIO - KAREN MARTZ EDITORIAL LAYOUTS This student editorial layout brief required a masthead, front cover and two double page spreads. This also included photography and self portraits. Nouveau magazine was designed to be a magazine for the creative arts, it featured soft muted tones and illustrative flair. A selection of hand crafted type for the masthead sets the tone of the magazine and is balanced by geometric shapes placed in the background of the cover story photograph The article image features elements of self made type to enhance an existing type style as well as black and white, high contrast imagery. Colour photography and illustrated pull quotes balance the large black and white image coupled with a sans serif type for a clean and polished look. PORTFOLIO - KAREN MARTZ 2 BRAND IDENTITY This brand identity project showcases the fictional restaurant The Madison. The brief required a logo and brand identity items approriate for a restaurant including packaging. The final items were a double sided large format menu, 3 promotional postcards and a condiment box with label. The Madison design was inspired by 1920’s art deco architecture and style. The items were designed to reflect a young audience that wanted an elegant night out without a hefty bill. The logo features a silhouette of a young lady with an era appropriate hairstyle and hairpiece with type selected to tie in to the sharp angles of the accompanying brand items. The brand items feature Gatsby-esque line work which when applied to each item draws the viewer from the central element of the logo to the full width of the design. A 3 colour palette across the items reinforces the brand identity through consistency. It reflects the often used black of the 1920’s as well as bringing in a touch of the modern era with aqua. PORTFOLIO - KAREN MARTZ 3 LOGO DESIGN A well considered logo is an integral part of a business. The first example shown is the branding for my own freelance design business, Duende Design. In designing this logo I aimed for a strong logotype that would be appealing to both male and female audiences that had great scalability and could be applied to various brand identity items The colour selection was based on colour psychology and the feelings it would emote in the viewer. In the brand material I chose a bold take on chevron, using vibrant colours and straight lines to contrast the circular logo. The colours and pattern are applied throughout the brand identitymaterials and the website uses elements of the logo design in icons to represent different skillsets of the business. The Fusionfest Logo was designed as a part of student design brief for an urban music festival. This logo features a combination of type that blends with the illustrative elements of the logo as the guitar lead begins to form the festival name. This logo was applied to a 12 page full colour booklet, poster and a website design. PORTFOLIO - KAREN MARTZ 4 DIGITAL IMAGE CREATION These images showcase Photoshop skills. They feature my own photography combined with photoshop techniques and use sourced textures to complete the images. Both of these images were for a design brief to advertise a known product. The next step in the process was to select textures that worked with the image of the product in the market. Various techniques were applied to create images that could be used in a number of applications such as advertising and magazines. For the image on the left, the Marshall amplifier, I chose a concrete texture to give a rough and rugged feel to the composition. The Versace Cologne image features a water splash to give the fresh feel of using cologne. The items were photographed in a combination of natural light and artificially lit settings. PORTFOLIO - KAREN MARTZ 5 ILLUSTRATION I enjoy exploring a range of illustration techniques such as digital illustration using Illustrator and Photoshop as well as hand lettering. I also illustrate using other media such as watercolour paint, pencil and pastels. Featured to the left are wall art designs that are for sale through my online stores on Etsy and Red Bubble. I also pride myself on maintaining a carefully curated social media feed on Facebook and Instagram using my own images where I feature various illustrations, quotes, photographs and design tips. As a graphic designer I feel it is very important to showcase my work across these platforms and to do so in a cohesive and engaging way. PORTFOLIO - KAREN MARTZ 6 APPAREL DESIGN These logo and uniform designs for the NSW Dodgeball league required that each team be given a unique look and style. Featured here are the Campbelltown Crushers and Central Coast Coyotes. This diverse brief allowed me to take a different approach as each team needed to look distinctly different to the others. I was able to use a variety of style and techniques coupled with bold colour choices to create uniforms that the teams would love and that would make them stand out on the court. PORTFOLIO - KAREN MARTZ 7 WEB DESIGN My portfolio also extends to web design skills - this includes User Interface and User Experience. From breaking down the website needs to create a persona to taking it to wireframing and a full colour static layout, through to coding in HTML and CSS as well as using Javascript and PHP. The websites featured here are fully responsive across a number of device widths. They feature content that appears and disappears dependant on the device being used as to make for faster loading times and less scroll fatigue. They also feature contact forms with a number of input options, embedded maps and Image galleries. These website designs feature original logos and graphic elements such as icons and background patterns. This 12 page full colour booklet featured front and back cover design, information about the festival, band bio’s, a map, FAQ’s section and a menu. The festival was an urban rock weekend event. To set the tone I used bold colours with halftone patterns. All background textures and icons were created to fit the overall feel of the booklet. The design choices made in the booklet were made to build a vibrant keepsake for attendees to take home that also covered all the information that they would need presented in an intriguing and easy to read format.
