Company Press Book Mobile World Congress 2015 | 4YFN Press Book Mobile World Congress 2015 The Mobile World Congress The Congress in fgures The global benchmark congress in mobile telephone technology organised by the GSMA, the international organisation uniting mobile communication oper- ators worldwide, returns to Barcelona once again this March 2-5. This year’s event, celebrated under the title The Edge of Innovation will welcome leading sector businesses in the 100,000 m² designed to accommodate them in the Fira Gran Via facilities, where the organisers expect to house near 2,000 exhibitors and outdo the fgure of 90,000 visitors (last year some 85,000 leading profes- sional attended the event). For the second year running, part of the attention of this global event will also be focused on the Montjuïc Trade Fair area, where the second edition of the 4 Years from Now (4YFN) event will be held, aimed at entrepreneurs, start-ups, and incubators and investors from the mobile sector. This year the Mobile World Congress is forecasted to bring a direct fnancial re- turn to the city of Barcelona of some €436 M: a fgure far greater than last year’s fgure of €390 M, which broke all previous records. The Congress is also expect- ed to create over 12,600 temporary jobs. As is the norm, this year’s conference programme of the MWC includes major names from the most important frms in the mobile sector, such as the CEO of ARM, Simon Segars, the president and CEO of Ericsson, Hans Vestberg, the president of Micromax Informatics Limited, Sanjay Kapoor, and the CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated, Steve Mollenkopf. Moreover, the Congress is proud to host, for the second year running, a conference given by the Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg, and the keynote speech from Sunbar Pichai, responsible for developing the Google operating system Android. There are 167 companies and institutions from all of Spain participating, 7.7% more than last year (155). Out of these, 95 are from Catalonia, an increase over last year’s fgure of 91. 4 The Catalan angle: the Government of Catalonia promotes the participation of 52 Catalan frms and 8 technology centres. Once again, and for the tenth year in a row, the Government of Catalonia, through the Ministry of Enterprise and Labour, gives its support to Catalan companies so they can have a relevant presence in the Mobile World Congress. Thus, in this year’s edition 52 Catalan frms and 8 technology centres or research institutes selected by both ACCIÓ, the Agency for Business Com- petitiveness and the Directorate General for Telecommunications and Information - both affliated to the Ministry of Enterprise and Labour – in basis of their interna- tional vision and clearly innovative profle. The companies and technology centres are located in two different areas within the Congress: 1. Catalonia Stand: The Catalan Pavilion hosts 44 Catalan companies and organizations that will present their products and services to the professionals attending the event. This space will also host the technological meetings be- tween companies known as the Brokerage Event. In addition, the Catalonia Stand will allocate an area equivalent to that used by the companies to welcome the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), of which ACCIO is coordinating member. It will offer consultancy services and information in different areas such as international partner sourcing for R+D and innovation projects, technological and commercial cooperation. 2. App Planet: in this area, dedicated to the development of mobile telephone apps and telecommunications, 16 catalan companies and technology cen- tres will participate. Throughout these 10 editions of the Mobile World Congress the Government of Catalonia has fostered the participation of 311 Catalan companies. 5 The ICT sector in Catalonia The information and communications technology sector (ICT) employs 81,800 workers in Catalonia, a fgure representing about 2.9% of the working Cat- alan population, according to data from the Economically Active Population Survey (EPA, in Spanish) for the third quarter of 2013. This area includes activi- ties belonging both to the industrial sector (component manufacture, equipment, computers, etc.) and services (programme edition, telecommunications, data processing, equipment repair, etc.). As the fgures show, ICT is one of Catalonia’s most dynamic economic sectors. With over 12,000 companies (a fgure which represents almost 2% of all Cat- alan companies), over 18,000 million euros of annual turnover and over 500 million euros spent annually on R+D, it is a driving growth force that despite the crisis generates wealth and quality job creation. The sector concentrates 70% of its activity within the Barcelona area. ICT’s subsector of mobility is showing solid growth, specifcally from those companies developing mobile solutions. This is a phenomenon that has un- doubtedly been reinforced by public policies that have pushed the creation of a powerful technological sector in Catalonia and especially thanks to the adjudica- tion in 2011 of Barcelona as Mobile World Capital between 2012 and 2018, a position that places both the city and the Catalonia, right in the global centre of mobile communications. Its role as world mobile capital has encouraged Barcelona and Catalonia to de- velop innovative projects in this area. For example, T-Mobilitat, which will roll out a whole new system of ticketing with contactless technology in Cata- lan public transport; the mHealth programme which defnes health practices that can be performed via mobile devices, such as the access to the person- al Health fles or the tracking of patients with chronic illnesses; or the Mobile Community, the project and web platform which works to showcase mobile 6 companies, institutions and projects and where all information of interest to the sector can be shared. Furthermore, the mTalent programme – promoted by the Government of Cat- alonia via the Directorate General for Telecommunications and Information So- ciety, together with the Mobile World Capital and the Barcelona City Council and within the framework of the idigital Plan – has introduced various training and work guidance activities in the area of Mobile Technology. In 2014 over 5,000 people participated in more than 400 actions of Mobile training, of which special mention must be made of the Barcelona in moBiment, with 1,719 participants; the project Mobalitza’t Mobile aimed at unemployed young people, with 550 participants, or sessions carried out all over Catalonia by the 20 x 200, with 523 participants. Moreover, the mSchools programme, that encourages the use of Mobile Tech- nology in schools as a learning method, will teach 11,150 fourth-year students in 310 Catalan secondary schools the subject Mobilise Computing this school year. This initiative also includes teacher-training, actions to promote computer programming and robotics in educational centres, and also the call for entries in the Mobile Learning Awards, among others. Another of the grand challenges laid down by the Barcelona Mobile World Capital Foundation is to make – thanks to Mobile Technology and the new business opportunities it generates – traditional companies innovate and enter new markets, so that both technological companies and the traditional industry evolve and create an area of differential knowledge in Catalonia. 7 Brokerage Event: 10 years The Catalonia Stand celebrates the 10 years of the Brokerage Event in this year’s Mobile World Congress: the event that hosts the International meetings between the Mobile communication tech companies. The Brokerage Event is organized by ACCIÓ as a member of the European Commission’s Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), together with the other members from 30 different coun- tries, and it attracts an average of 500 companies every year. The Brokerage Event consists of 30-minute and pre-arranged bilateral interviews aimed at making international contacts and fnding possible partners to develop innovative projects by means of future international cooperation agreements; for example, trade agreements, licence distribution, joint ventures, subcontracting, technology transfer or collaborative R+D. Registered companies can consult the profles of other participants, to see if their offers and demands are in line with their interests, and request interviews via the event’s web page. Last year over 450 companies from 30 countries held 1,500 meetings. 450 Companies from 30 countries held 1500 meetings 2014 MAIN FIGURES Check out the Brokerage Event web: http://mwcbrokerageevent2015.talkb2b.net 8 Mapa Mobile World Congress Hall 8 App Planet Hall 8.1 Congress Square North Entrance Hall 7 Hall 6 Hall 5 Hall 4 Hall 3 Hall 2 Hall 1 South Entrance 10 App Planet Hall 8.1 Catalan Zone Catalan Technology Offering Hall 5 Congress Square Stand of Catalonia 11 Catalonia Stand pag. 14.
