Patron was Sir Samuel Walker Griffith (Premier of Queensland) 1897/98 and President was John McMaster (Mayor of Brisbane). First Grade, captained by John Blackstock, played their first match against North Brisbane at Brisbane Exhibition Ground, Bowen Hills. The match was played over 3 weekends, on 2, 9 & 16 October 1897, and resulted in a draw. 1898/99 Valley won its first Premiership – in Second Grade. 1901/02 Valley won the First Grade Premiership for the first time. 1926/27 Queensland entered the Sheffield Shield competition with Valley player, Leo O’Connor, the State’s first Sheffield Shield Captain. 1929/30 Valley played matches at Perry Park for the first time but New Farm Park was also used. 1931/32 The name of the club was changed to Valley District Cricket Club. 1958/59 The Queensland Cricketer’s Club was formed with Valley Secretary, Norm McMahon, a driving force behind its formation, elected its first Treasurer. 1960/61 Valley player, Col Hoy, umpired the famous Tied Test between Australia and the West Indies at The Gabba, and all other Tests in that Series. 1967/68 Valley played its last matches at Perry Park. 1968/69 The first games were played at Ashgrove Park, on what is now Norm McMahon Oval. New Farm Park was still in use. 1970/71 Both ovals were now in use at Ashgrove Park. The clubhouse was constructed and officially opened in December, 1970. 1972/73 First Grade won both Channel 0 $1000 Knockout 1-day competitions with the assistance of famous guest players, Alan Davidson and Richie Benaud, with & 73/74 Benaud playing his last game on an Australian cricket field for Valley in 1973/74. 1974/75 First Grade, captained by Keith Dudgeon, won the Premiership for the first time in 44 years. The club won its first Club Championship. 1976/77 GPS Old Boys Rugby Club became our joint tenants at Ashgrove Park. 1980/81 Australian players, Allan Border and Kepler Wessels joined Valley. Allan Border was appointed Australian Captain, the first Valley player to achieve this honour. First Grade, captained by Terry Khan, won the Premiership. 1984/85 Ashgrove 3 was used for the first time. Games at New Farm Park were phased out. 1992/93 Matthew Hayden made his Test debut, against South Africa. The club won its seventh Club Championship – the third in a row. 1993/94 Valley Juniors was formed, with 400 boys and girls in 32 teams from Under 9 to Under 16. Valley player, Stuart Law, with the support of other Valley players, Allan Border and Matthew Hayden, captained Queensland to its first Sheffield Shield title. 1994/95 First Grade, captained by Brett Henschell, won the Premiership. 1996/97 First Grade, captained by Michael Ephraims, won the Premiership, the club its eighth Club Championship, and Queensland its second Sheffield Shield title. The club’s 100th year was celebrated by 363 attendees at the Centenary Dinner at the Sheraton Hotel, 7 March, 1998. Allan Border, Alan Davidson, and, former 1997/98 Test Umpire, Mel Johnson, were the guest speakers. Pat Welsh, of Channel 7 and brother of former First Grade player, John Welsh, was the MC. Queensland won its third “Shield” title – the inaugural Pura Cup – with Valley players, Matthew Hayden, Joe Dawes, and Lee Carseldine (squad) involved. Club 1999/00 Patron, Allan Border, was selected in Australia’s Test Team of the 20th Century. The club won the Club Championship for the ninth time. Queensland won its fourth “Shield” title – the Pura Cup – with Valley players, Matthew Hayden, Joe 2000/01 Dawes and Lee Carseldine involved. 2002/03 The club won its eleventh Club Championship, its eighth in the last fifteen years. 2003/04 The club won five senior Premierships – 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades, and B1 Sub Districts – and fielded a record 62 teams: 11 senior teams and 51 junior teams. With the assistance of grants from 3 levels of government, and contributions from the 2 rugby clubs we share our grounds with, the club completed a significant redevelopment of the Peter Easton and Norm McMahon playing fields that incorporated new turf, a new irrigation and drainage system, two 1-million litre water 2008/09 tanks, new and upgraded field lighting, picket fencing to the northern boundary of Peter Easton Oval, a new fairway mower, a new cricket pitch roller, and the completion of the cricket practice nets complex, named the Allan Border & Matthew Hayden Training Centre in honour of two of the club’s finest players. 2012/13 Two Senior Championships (1st Grade T20, Sunday Legends T20), three Senior Premierships (6th(1) Grade, C1 & C3 Sub Districts) and two Junior Premierships. 2013/14 One Senior Championship (1st Grade T20), three Senior Premierships (1st Grade, 6th(1) Grade, C2 Sub Districts), and two Junior Premierships. 2015/16 Two Senior Premierships (4th Grade, 6th(2) Grade) and two Junior Premierships. In recent years, a new dressing room pavilion, new equipment shed and nets. Another record number of teams and players: 124 teams (14 Senior and 110 Junior) including 1419 players (221 Senior and 1198 Junior). 2018/19 First Grade captain Andrew Gode won the Peter Burge Medal, becoming the first medallist from VDCC since the award’s introduction in 1990/91. One Senior Championship (1st Grade One Day, one Senior Premierships (6th(1) Grade) and eight Junior Premierships. Field lighting upgraded. VALLEY DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC.
