It’s where professional development exists, bookings materialize and relationships are built. Only eight years into this industry, I have to admit, I had no idea how fortunate we are in North Carolina to work in a state that has such a positive reputation in the arts. As my opportunity to travel for work has increased over the last year, I’ve repeatedly heard the same message from colleagues in other states, “OH! You’ve got the really good consortium!” and “How do you get so many bookings to work?” It’s an easy answer, and one that has developed because of YOU! “It’s collaborations without competiveness.” Thanks to each of you, YOU are presenters, artists, service vendors and agents who create an environment of shared success, relationships and cooperation. The foundation of this success comes from the partnership of our hosts, the North Carolina Arts Council and the North Carolina Presenters Consortium. Please join me in thanking the Board of Directors and staff of these two illustrious organizations; their hard work and preparation has been unwavering. We also express our sincere gratitude to our Executive Director, Susan Heiserman, the ArtsMarket staff, volunteers; and the outrageously fun and incredibly skilled staff of the Carolina Theatre. Their preparation has created an environment that breathes professionalism and creativity. I’ve been affectionately told by friends and colleagues that I “live in Candyland,” that my outlook on life consists of unicorns and rainbows. It seems to fit my perspective of ArtsMarket too. For me, ArtsMarket is that pot of gold that supports my goal of connecting artists and audiences. So join me in Candyland…grab your booking calendar, a few colorful sprinkles and saddle up your own unicorn. You’ll find great talent, a hospitable spirit and comradeships that are second to none. Sincerely, Sherry Archibald Paramount Theatre Director, Goldsboro President, North Carolina Presenters Consortium 5 WELCOME BOB NOCEK Dear ArtsMarket Attendees: On behalf of the Carolina Theatre and the North Carolina Presenters Consortium, welcome to Downtown Durham for ArtsMarket 2015! For those of you who have been here before: welcome back! We’re grateful for the opportunity to once again serve as the host for this wonderful performing arts showcase conference. Arts- Market is one of our favorite events no matter where it’s held, but we take a special joy when our historic performing arts venue is the setting where artists and agents from across the country can meet arts presenters from North Carolina and the entire East Coast. Whether you’ve attended ArtsMarket in the past or are a newcomer, we’re sure you’ll find this three-day event to be filled with wonderful opportunities for skilled artists to showcase their talents and for agents to have meaningful conversations with presenters on a level that is often difficult to accomplish at large-scale national conferences. While you are forming important working relationships for the future over the next few days, please set some time aside to discover some of the incredible amenities our city has to offer. It seems that with each passing day, Durham is lauded by another national media outlet, publica- tion or website for its artistic and cultural offerings, tasty food and drink options or world class accommodations. We believe you’ll find Durham to be a creative community dedicated to supporting the arts and the framework that helps them flourish. It’s supported us for 90 years and counting! We’re glad you’re here, and we wish you a great visit to Durham and the Carolina Theatre. Regards, Bob Nocek President & CEO Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc. 6 Durham’s home for music, comedy, performing arts and cinema. Johnston met to negotiate the Confederacy’s surrender in Durham—and officially ended the Civil War. Around the turn of the 20th century, the Parrish Street neighborhood in Durham was dubbed “Black Wall Street” because of the many enterprising African-Americans who built hugely successful businesses. Dr. James E. Shephard founded Durham’s North Carolina Central University as the first publicly-supported liberal arts college for African-Americans in 1910. One of the earliest sit-ins of the Civil Rights movement took place in Durham on June 23, 1957, when seven African-American men entered the Royal Ice Cream Parlour and sat in the “white-only” booths. Duke University was originally called Trinity College, until in 1924 it received a generous dose of philanthropic support from the Duke family and the name was changed in their honor. The Research Triangle Park is one of the most prominent high-tech research and development centers in the U.S., employing over 60,000 people for 190 different companies, and the Triangle area has one of the highest per capita concentrations of PhDs in the nation. Listed five times in the top 5 in Pollstar magazine’s annual worldwide theater attendance rankings, DPAC is currently the #4 ranked theater in the U.S. 8 ABOUT DURHAM A BUNCH OF BULL One of Durham’s legacy nicknames is the “Bull City,” now signified by a full-size, bronze statue in the City Center District of Downtown. But the nickname isn’t related to livestock. John Green of the Blackwell Tobacco Company named his product “Bull” Durham Tobacco after seeing it used on containers of Coleman’s Mustard, which Green mistakenly thought was produced in Durham’s Sister City, Durham, England. By the time James B. Duke and the American Tobacco Company purchased Blackwell in 1898, Bull Durham was the most famous trademark in the world. It sparked such popular phrases as “bullpen” (from a Bull Durham ad painted behind the Yankees’ dugout) and “shooting the bull” (most likely from chewing tobacco). The famous bull’s image was painted all over the world, including on the Great Pyramid of Egypt! Today, the endearing term lives on symbolizing Durham’s colorful past and enduring entrepreneurial spirit. –Museum of Durham History 9 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS Audio & Light Greensboro, NC www.audio-light.com Admire Entertainment Palisades, NY www.admireentertainment.com 845-365-3436 www.admireentertainment.com Alkahest Artists & Attractions Chattanooga, TN www.alkahestartists.net Baylin Artists Management Doylestown, PA www.baylinartists.com BiCoastal Productions New York, NY www.bicoastalproductions.com The Cabarrus Arts Council Concord, NC www.cabarrusartscouncil.org 10 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS CAMI Music New York, NY www.camimusic.com The Carolina Theatre Durham, NC www.carolinatheatre.org Ed Keane Associates Boston, MA www.edkeane.com Duke Performances Durham, NC www.dukeperformances.duke.edu Durham Performing Arts Center Durham, NC www.dpacnc.com Elon University Elon, NC www.elon.edu 11 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS Gardner Arts Network New York, NY www.gardnerartsnetwork.com goingbarefoot Durham, NC www.goingbarefoot.com Holly Springs Cultural Center Holly Springs, NC www.hollyspringsnc.us JRA Fine Arts Nashville, TN www.jrafinearts.com KMP Artists Austin, TX wwwkmpartists.com Kosson Talent New Freedom, PA wwwkossontalent.com Loyd Artists Leicester, NC www.loydartists.com 12 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS NC State Live Raleigh, NC live.arts.ncsu.edu Our State Magazine Greensboro, NC www.ourstate.com Paramount Theatre Goldsboro, NC www.goldsboroparamount.com PMG Arts Management Durham, NC www.pmgartsmgt.com Robin Klinger Entertainment Great Neck, NY www.robinklingerentertainment.com The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass Philadelphia, PA www.rmpbb.com SeaSound Entertainment Raleigh, NC www.entertainment.agency 13 OPENING KEYNOTE NNENNA FREELON ix-time GRAMMY® Award nominee Nnenna Freelon has earned a well-deserved reputation as a compelling and captivating live performer.
