MISSION Our mission is to sustain The Cooper Union as a free center of learning and civic discourse that inspires inventive, creative, and influential voices in architecture, art, and engineering to address the critical challenges and opportunities of our time. Academic Calendars The Cooper Union for The Advancement of Science and Art operates within a two semester calendar (fall and spring). Most classes are scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. We offer a limited summer session with courses typically provided in Math, Physics, and Engineering. Normal business hours are: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. ­ 5 p.m. From early June through Labor Day, Cooper Union operates under a summer schedule: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. ­ 5:15 p.m. 2018 ­ 2019 Academic Calendar Aug 29 Wednesday Move­in day for Residence Hall Aug 29 ­ Sept 3 Wednesday ­ Monday New student orientation Sept 3 Monday Labor Day Sept 4 Tuesday Fall semester classes begin. NOTE: Tuesday classes meet Sept 11 Tuesday Last day to drop/add courses based on your school’s policy regarding drop/add. May 20 Monday Commencement rehearsal; annual student exhibition opens May 21 Tuesday Commencement May 27 Monday Memorial Day (Staff Holiday) July 4 Thursday Independence Day Observed (Staff Holiday) Accreditation The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) since 1946 and was most recently reaccredited in 2018. As a member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, The Cooper Union voluntarily participates in the accreditation process. The MSCHE mission states that it, "assures students and the public of the educational quality of higher education. The Commission’s accreditation process ensures institutional accountability, self­appraisal, improvement, and innovation through peer review and the rigorous application of standards within the context of institutional mission." MSCHE University Accreditation Process Accreditation entails ongoing self­assessment and a peer review process, both with the stated purpose of assuring educational quality. The MSCHE Accreditation Standards and Requirements of Affiliation provide ongoing guidance to institutions engaged in self­review and peer evaluation. They are comprised of 7 standards and 15 requirements. Accredited institutions are expected to demonstrate compliance with these standards and requirements, to conduct their activities in a manner consistent with the standards and requirements in the context of their mission, and to engage in ongoing processes of self­review and improvement. The Evaluation Team representing the Middle States Commission on Higher Education was comprised of members from peer institutions who facilitated a peer review process based on Cooper Union’s mission and Self Study. An institution is accredited when the educational community has verified that its goals are achieved. Master of Architecture 0202 Master of Architecture II * Admission to the Fine Arts Certificate program is currently suspended. The Cooper Union operates on a semester calendar, typically with the fall starting after Labor Day and the spring after Martin Luther King Day. Please refer to our academic calendar for specific term start and end dates. A limited summer term is offered with a small inventory of courses. See Assignment of Credit Hours The Cooper Union is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; all of the degree programs are registered with the New York State Education Department. In addition, the program leading to the bachelor of architecture degree is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, the program leading to the bachelor of fine arts degree is accredited by the Association of Schools of Art and Design and the four programs (chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering) leading to the bachelor of engineering degree are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
