October 2017 Monthly Catalogue Welcome to the October 2017 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month. This month we have a particularly interesting list of books on fish and marine mammals. The Royal Museum for Central Africa is publishing The Inland Water Fishes of Africa: Diversity, Ecology and Human Use, while the Paris Museum of Natural History is publishing Charles Plumier (1646-1704) and His Drawings of French and Caribbean Fishes, both due in October. More practical titles are North Sea Fish and Their Remains from Pisces Conservation, which can both be used to identify live fish, and establish identity based on fish remains, and Marine Fishes of Arctic Canada from the University of Toronto Press (December). Of related interest are the recently published Whales' Bones of the Americas, South Atlantic and Antarctica which is the final book in this series on the practical and decorative uses to which whale bones have been put, and Newsouth Publishing's The Secret Life of Whales: A Marine Biologist Reveals All (November). We have two excellent books on bats. Pelagic Publishing will publish Field Guide to Amazonian Bats (February), which is the first such compilation for this species-rich region. We also received a book on the bats of the Swiss canton of Fribourg, which is available in either French or German. Chimaira released Studies on Anomalies in Natural Populations of Amphibians, and Bloomsbury has announced a second edition of the Field Guide to East African Reptiles for January. We furthermore now stock A Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles of the Maasai Mara, which is an affordable pocket guide. Birders can look out for Behind More Binoculars (October), which is a sequel to the previous collection of interviews with birdwatchers, as well as two fold-out guides to birds of Japan and Thailand. Brill has announced the second edition of Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera, Volume 1: Archostemata - Myxophaga - Adephaga for October. On the subject of plants, we have NatureBureau's The Flora of Sussex (February), the Nordic Lichen Flora, Volume 6: Verrucariaceae 1, and Three Centuries of Garden Lists, a compilation of plants lists from historically important works. Readers interested in conservation and biodiversity should have a look at the work done by a group of environmental lawyers, as related in Client Earth, while Financial Times columnist Harry Eyres shows how our ability to observe Earth from a distance has transformed the awareness of our environmental impact in Seeing Our Planet Whole: A Cultural and Ethical View of Earth Observation. Struik, in the meantime, has announced a book with a cautiously optimistic note; Overkill: The Race to Save Africa's Wildlife is due December. We also have several fascinating books on the history of science, with MIT Press announcing Listening in the Field: Recording and the Science of Birdsong for March, which describes how sound recording has evolved, the University Press of New England publishing The Lives of Dillon Ripley: Natural Scientist, Wartime Spy, and Pioneering Leader of the Smithsonian Institution, and Chicago University Press releasing a paperback version of Huxley's Church and Maxwell's Demon, which charts the rise of naturalistic science. If you are looking for something lighter to read, Seren Books published the memoir Waterfalls of Stars: Ten Years on Skomer Island, while Lonely Planet provides the perfect book to plan your next outdoor trip with National Parks of Europe. As always, if you are looking for a particular title that we do not yet have in our range, or you would like to suggest a title for NHBS to stock, please do get in touch.
