With an increasing number of American opera companies and workshops presenting musical theatre pieces and the inclusion of this genre in the opera program of the National Endowment for the Arts, Central Opera Service continues to serve the operatic community by making this expanded information available. Included here are 1,525 listings of sets and/or costumes for 402 opera/musical theatre works, arranged in alphabetical order by a) composers, b) title of work, c) sets and costumes, sets only, and costumes only. An address list of rental sources — companies, workshops, and commercial scenic and costume houses — includes telephone numbers, the name of the rental contact and, in the case of opera com- panies, the size of the stage. As a result of increasing performances of opera in English, many new translations have been commissioned, and they form the second part of this volume. The Addenda to the 1973-74 Directory of English Opera Translations lists 336 new translations, bringing the total of available English opera translations to 1,581. Copies of the earlier volume are available from COS, and should be used together with the current listing; each has its own source address list. A cross-reference Index by title, serving both sections of this current Directory, may be found on page 54. We acknowledge with sincere gratitude the dedicated assistance of our volunteers, Norma Litton and Fritzi Bickhardt, who helped to make this publication possible. Maria F. Rich Editor Jeanne Kemp Assistant Editor — 1 — GUIDE TO CODES Directory of Sets and Costumes for Rent s,c = sets and costumes s = sets c = costumes ( ) = name of designer and year built. If two names, scenic designer pre- cedes costume designer. 00x00x00 = actual playing size of set; width, depth, height [00x00] = stage size of theatre (width x depth). This is included only if infor- mation on playing area of specific production was unavailable. 0/00' = number of trucks required for transport/size of truck(s) in feet 0/ = number of trucks required for transport/size of truck unavailable — statement = description or specific information given by renting company The address list for this section may be found on page 37. Addenda to Directory of English Opera Translations The number or letter following the translator's name indicates the source of availability. Single digit numbers are publishers (list A), triple digit numbers are performing com- panies (list B), C is from the translator directly. The address list for this section may be found on page 49. When writing to publishers or performing companies indicate whose translation interests you, but do not address your inquiries to the translators c/o the company since they may no longer be affiliated with that group. Copies of the 1973-74 Translations Directory, listing over 1,200 English translations, are available from COS.
