You will see the ever-changing layers of sediment and new colors at every turn, plus there are tiny pre- colonial towns like Tilcara and Humahuaca where you can take a leisurely break along the way. Make plenty of stops for photos and try to get in lots of sites before the wind and dust kicks up later in the day. Tilcara is the favorite of the villages along the Quebrada de Humahuaca. It is home to the pre-Inca fortification known as the Pucara, an important archaeological site with a nearby cactus garden. The picturesque town also features an archaeological museum and botanical gardens, plus a fun main plaza with handicraft vendors, bands, and street performers. In the afternoon, we will visit the highest vinyard in the world in Uraqui. It is also a place to study ecolocy, low-impact farming and local Aymara culture. The highlight of the adventure lies in the sheer, bright Salinas Grandes, salt flats where stark lines clearly separate the vast blue sky and the silvery-white, fissured ground. The Salinas Grandes, or Great Salt Flats, stands at 3 450 metres (11 320 feet) above sea level, stretching over the Salta and Jujuy provinces, and is said to be the remnants of an ancient spent river, with shimmering salt flats stretching into the background of the Andes Mountains. The house of salt boasts unique salt carvings and sculptures by local artists, who draw inspiration from the stark landscape to create wondrous pieces that glimmer beneath the fierce sun.
