BRISTOL INFIRMARY IN-PATIENTS REGISTER INDEX 1750-1775 INTRODUCTION The Bristol Infirmary was instituted as a charity in 1735 and opened the doors to its newly built premises in 1737. Over the years it has been enlarged and improved and now provides medical services on a large scale in the centre of Bristol. It received the “Royal” accolade in 1850 at the wish of Queen Victoria. In the national context it was one of the earliest of the major hospitals and as such it admitted patients from a very wide area; all over Somerset, Gloucestershire and well into Wales. The family historian is fortunate that from the very first day in 1737 records of admission were kept of all the patients that were treated. The records of In-patients were kept in large ledger books and entries made across the full double page under the following headings. Patient's Names Age Parish Recommender Admission date Distemper (ailment) Discharge date State (on discharge i.e. cured or transferred or died) Entries in the early registers are made in chronological order by date of admission. This means that there is virtually no chance of finding a particular person without an index which is why this one has been compiled. It covers the years 1750 to 1775 only although a start has been made on indexing other years. The index includes the Patient's names; Age; Parish and date of admission and is indexed alphabetically by Surname. The ailment for which the patient was admitted may be found by consulting the original volumes, or these days a microfiche copy in Bristol Record Office. The fiche reference is 35893/19. The entry will be found under the date of admission. However there is one pit-fall waiting for the unwary. At the end of each year a summary of patient numbers was drawn up by the Infirmary, presumably for statistical purposes. Those patients not discharged by the last audit day of the year (not necessarily December 31st) were "carried forward" and their names re-entered at the commencement of the following year using the same date of admission. They therefore appear twice in the register. In the original register such patients are indicated by the ABSENCE of a date in the "DISCHARGE" column in the year when admitted. Therefore in the absence of a "DISCHARGE" date for a patient, the searcher should move forward to the beginning of the next year to seek the duplicate entry. It is this entry that will include the discharge date and the State, or outcome of the treatment. This index was compiled by Gordon and Barbara Faulkner, long-standing members of the Society, and our thanks are due to them.
