Source documents have largely been civil registrations and church registers though many entries come from other sources including submission from members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Deaths are not included in the index while a small number of entries have been extracted from other sources e.g. census records. The 1992 microfiche edition of the IGI totals approximately 187 million entries. The IGI is also available in the Society on CD-ROM and can also be accessed through the Internet at www.familysearch.com. Both these versions are more recent than the microfiche version. Events included generally range in time from the earliest church registers (1500's) to 1875. There are some entries which are more recent than 1875, but they form a very small percentage of the total. The Southwest Pacific section IGI includes a relatively small section for Australia. Details of the ancestor being researched, and name and address of the researcher are given. 7 AUSTRALIA (AUS) ARMY RECORDS The British Army in Australia 1788-1870 Index of Personnel A list of more than 34,000 British troops and Marines who served in all the Australian colonies (and some also for New Zealand). It also indicates those who were killed in action (KIA), died of wounds (DOW), or were discharged abroad or returned to Australia (RTA). A blank entry in the column giving this information indicates that the serviceman was still abroad, on duty, as at October 1919. Nominal Roll of Deceased Members of the AIF & the AN&MEF A record of persons serving in the AIF, including the Australian Flying Corps and Medical units and the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) to New Guinea during World War 1, who died in service.
