Houdet, Vergeer and Gershony Prevail in Mechelen

The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com Houdet, Vergeer and Gershony prevail in Mechelen Stephane Houdet (FRA) and Noam Gershony (ISR) won their first NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters men’s and quad singles titles in Mechelen, Belgium on Sunday, while Esther Vergeer clinched the women’s singles title for a 14th successive year. Maikel Scheffers and world No. 3 Houdet completed the round-robin phase of the competition undefeated to progress to the semifinals where they faced Ronald Vink (NED) and Robin Ammerlaan (NED) respectively. Scheffers then overcame the world No. 6 63 62, while Houdet fought back from a set down to defeat the six-time former champion Ammerlaam 06 63 63. The Frenchman made a better start in the final, securing a straight sets victory over Scheffers 64 76(2). Vergeer expended little energy in extending her singles winning streak to 434 matches. She eased through her round-robin group for the loss of just six games before defeating compatriot Stephane Houdet (FRA) 14 November 2011 Issue 46 and world No. 4 Marjolein Buis 60 60 in the semifinals. Aniek van Koot upset world No. 2 Jiske (Photo: Imagellan) Griffioen 63 64 in the other all-Dutch semifinal to reach her first NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters final, where she fell to the imperious Vergeer 61 62. “After winning 14 NEC Masters titles I really feel like this is my tournament as I’ve won it so many times in the Netherlands so I’m very happy to win the first one here in Belgium,” said Vergeer. World No. 3 Gershony bounced back from a set down to take the title on his debut at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters. Britain’s Andrew Lapthorne made a sensational start to the final, claiming the first set 60, but couldn’t maintain his high level, eventually falling to Gershony 06 63 75. “This is all new to me as it is my first win in a major final outside of the Super Series events and my first NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters, so to be champion feels quite strange, but I am very, very happy,” said Gershony.
