Vale Billbarnett

VALE BILL BARNETT The Sydney Flying Squadron salutes the memory of Billy Barnett OAM, a true legend in 18-Footer sailing and in Australian boatbuilding, who died on Sunday, 18 March, in his 103 rd year. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to his wife, Gloria, and daughters Cynthia and Margaret and their families. Bill Barnett seemed immortal. We knew he would eventually leave us but, in doing so, he bequeaths an indelible and proud legacy to our Club. He will always be a paramount champion and hero to anyone associated with the SFS. Billy Barnett is famous for many outstanding sailing and boatbuilding achievements: designing and building competitive boats – dinghies, surfboats, Dragons, 5.5 metre class yachts, 18-footers, and the Australian Challenge 12 metre yachts for the America’s Cup, Dame Pattie in 1967 and building Gretel II in 1970. Each of these would be a significant accomplishment in itself. But for the SFS, it would be difficult to surpass our pride in his bagging the State, Australian and World 18-Footer Titles all in one year - 1951 - in his exceptional Myra Too. This was the first time the Sydney Flying Squadron had netted the JJ Giltinan Trophy and Bill Barnett’s triumph will always be foremost in our proud annals of our Club. The replica Myra Too, launched in 2013, sails in the Historical 18-Footer fleet today. The funeral will be held at 11.15am on Tuesday, 27 March in the Northern Suburbs Crematorium (old one) in the North Chapel, to be followed by a wake at the Sydney Flying Squadron from 1-5pm. Sail on, Bill Barnett, rest easy and in peace. Our sailing community will stay staunchly proud of your achievements, and your premier status in our maritime heritage is assured. .
