Simmons made slow start and Graf took the first round. In the second Simmons was in charge and he had the SILVER German-based fighter hurt with a right. It was more of the same in the third with Simmons dominant. Graf had some Stephen Simmons, success in the fourth but near the end of the round a right from Simmons put Graf down. Acosta had only lost inside the distance twice before to Anthony Mundine and in a WBO title challenge against Robert Stieglitz. Smith controlled the fight with a strong jab pressurising Acosta and looking for an opening to end the fight early. Acosta absorbed good shots but proved elusive. It was the sixth round before Smith found the punch to end the contest. A left hook to the body put Acosta down. The Argentinian got to his feet but after a few more choice shots from Smith another body punch put Acosta down again for the KO. It was 1 min. 20 secs in round six. The 23-year-old 6’3” (191cm) Smith won the vacant WBC International title. After recovering from a hand injury, Callum is now ready to make his first title defence. WBC #11 contender Estadio Ruca Che, Neuquen, Neuquen, Argentina November 29, 2013 Heiland wins dramatic fight which sees both fighters on the floor. Godoy took an early lead as Heiland made his usual slow start. Godoy was working well with the jab and floored Heiland in the third. Southpaw Heiland started rolling in the fifth and sixth scoring well with hard lefts. In the seventh a right cross from Heiland had Godoy down, Godoy was badly shaken and only just survived the round. Heiland had the upper hand in the eighth and ninth, but Godoy battled back to take the tenth making good use of his jab. After an even eleventh , both fighters came out firing for the last knowing that the fight was in the balance. Heiland ended it with a tremendous left cross which sent Godoy to the canvas. The defending champion made it to his feet but was still shaken and the referee completed the ten count. Huge win for the 26-year-old “El Gaucho de Pigue” as he rebounds from a loss to Mateo Veron in June. The former WBC Interim title challenger (he lost on points to Sebastian Zbik in 2010) wins the WBC International title and rejuvenates his career. Former champion Billi “The Kid” , 27, is still national champion, but dropped down from his previous No 5 place to 17. WBC International Middleweight Silver belt champ : Nick Brinson Local Nick “The Machine Gun” Brinson upset world- ranked knockout specialist Jorge “Destroyer” Melendez (26-3-1, 25 KOs) by 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night June 7th 2013 at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY. Brinson controlled the fight except for a wild round four where both fighters were knocked down. Melendez was deducted a point in round nine for hitting behind the head. Scores were 96-92, 98-91, 99-90. Nick is now (16-1-2, 6 KOs) and placed at #27 in the WBC ratings. Brinson will most likely make a defence against WBC #33 Caleb Truax. The fight is on the line to be staged in Hialeah, Florida (US) end of next April beginning of next May. More to come.
