Haggard, Jr. Library, on Coit Rd, between Park and Parker Roads, Plano, Texas at 6:30 p.m. Individual Membership is $25.00 per year. All memberships start July 1, and include a one year subscription to the Society’s publication - the Collin Chronicles and its newsletter. PAGE 66 Vol. 38 No 2: 2017-2018 COLLIN CHRONICLES 66 COLLIN COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PURPOSE: The Collin County Genealogy Society is a non-profit, educational society created to foster and maintain interest in genealogy among citizens of Collin County and surrounding areas. Out of state members with Collin County ancestors are encouraged to join. The Society publishes and disseminates genealogical and historical information to the public and assists the Haggard Library in acquisition of genealogical and historical research material. Through monthly meetings and other activities, the society encourages the exchange of ideas and helps its members to develop efficient methods for genealogical and historical research. MEMBERSHIP & DUES: Membership runs yearly from July 1. Dues are payable at that time, $25 for an individual, which entitles you to one set of publications and one vote, or a married couple may pay $27 which entitles you to one set of publications but two votes. Non-voting spouses are always welcome to attend meetings. COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS: The society welcomes letters from members about its publications and activities. Non-members may also submit queries which will be published as space permits. LIBRARY: Periodicals received from other societies on an exchange basis, books and manuscripts presented to the society and books sent for review in COLLIN CHRONICLES are placed in the W.O. Haggard, Jr. Library, Plano, Texas for use by the general public. PUBLICATIONS: The COLLIN CHRONICLES, dedicated to preserving the historical records of Collin County and surrounding counties, is mailed or emailed to all members, and to exchange societies. Write to the Society for information on availability of back issues. The newsletter is mailed to members and other societies. It contains notification of upcoming events, timely material from local societies, general research information, available materials from area libraries, spotlighting members, and other news. The option to download them is also available. MATERIAL FOR PUBLICATION: The society solicits unpublished Collin County related material. Emphasis is placed on source material, such as: Bible records, Church and Lodge records, Cemetery and Funeral Home records, Military records, Newspaper clippings, obituaries, old letters, maps and diaries, school, tax, voter and jury lists. In submitting Bible records, please send photocopies, including the title page and a typed copy of the record, in addition to a brief sketch about the family. Members may also submit their ahnentafel charts for publication, whether they have a Collin County connection or not. The editor reserves the right to edit all material. Submitted material may be returned if requested and accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope, otherwise it becomes the property of the society. COLLIN CHRONICLES Vol. 38 No. 2: 2017-2018 PAGE 67 IN MEMORIAM Photography by Janice and John Smith, CCGS Lloyd de Witt Bockstruck May 26, 1945 – May 27, 2018 Lloyd de Witt Bockstruck passed away on May 27, 2018 at the age of 73. He was born on May 26, 1945 to Harry E. & Olive E. (Blankenship) Bockstruck in Vandalia, Illinois. Lloyd was a Dallas resident and a well-known genealogy expert, speaker, educator, and writer, retiring on July 31, 2009, from the Dallas Public Library after 36 years of service, the last 30 years as the Supervisor of its Genealogy Section. For 17 years, he wrote a weekly genealogy column, Family Tree, in the Dallas Morning News. In addition to several videos of Lloyd, his many accomplishments, books, memberships, awards and honors are detailed on a memorial Web page by his friends at the Dallas Genealogical Society: http://dallasgenealogy.com/dgs/lloyd-bockstruck/. Lloyd was also a friend to CCGS agreeing to speak at our society meetings, all-day seminars and workshops even though our honorariums (donated to the Dallas Public Library’s Genealogy section) were less than what he could earn from other larger organizations. A Celebration of Life memorial service for Lloyd was held at the Peace Chapel / Cathedral of Hope Church, located at 5910 Cedar Springs Road, Dallas, Texas at 3 P.M. on Monday, June 11, 2018. It was well attended and several members of CCGS were there and shared their remembrances of Lloyd with his family and friends. Thank you, Lloyd. We miss you! PAGE 68 Vol. 38 No. 2: 2017-2018 COLLIN CHRONICLES Newspaper Obituaries Collected from Celina, Texas The “Newspaper Obituaries Collected from Celina, Texas” will include obituaries from the 1900s through 2010 and was submitted to CCGS by Gayle Maxson, author of three Collin County cemetery books: 1. The people of Cottage Hill Cemetery. Denton, Texas: G. Maxson (1999) 2. The people of Old Celina Cemetery, Celina, Texas. Decorah, IA: Anundsen Pub. (2002) 3. Cottage Hill Cemetery, Collin County, Texas. Decorah, IA: Anundsen Pub. (2004) A large portion of the obituaries were clipped from old Collin County newspapers by Juanita (Francis) Maxson, Gayle’s deceased mother-in-law. Jane Huddleston at the Celina Heritage Museum allowed Gayle to transcribe six scrapbooks full of old obituaries (cut out and pasted with no documentation by persons long deceased). The Celina Record newspaper began publishing weekly in 1902. Papers from 1923-1924 are missing from the collection. Thanks Gayle for preserving, consolidating, organizing and sharing this historical content! 1960’s concluded – Newspaper Obituaries Collected from Celina, Texas Emma Frances Stelzer: Miss Emma Frances Stelzer, a native of Celina, Texas and resident of California for more than 25 years died in Berkley, California on December 16, 1966 at age 79. Services were Monday at 10 a.m. in McMarry Chapel in Berkley. Dr. Gordon D. Forbes and Dr. Elmer Fridell officiated. Entombment was in Sunset Mausoleum. Miss Stelzer was born at the farm home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abiel Stelzer a short distance east of Celina, Texas. She was a nurse and member of the First Baptist Church of Berkley. Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Frances Lynn of Berkley, California and Mrs. Tom Gendenning of Celina, Texas; two nieces, Mrs. W. A. Bailey of Concord, California and Andy Williams of Seagraves, Texas; a nephew, Don T. Glendenning of Celina, Texas. Mrs. Glendenning who had been with Miss Stelzer since early in November returned to her home Wednesday. (The Celina Record, Celina, Texas, Thursday, December 22, 1966) Lisa Renee Stelzer: Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Celina Church of Christ for Lisa Stelzer, four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Stone Stelzer of Dallas, Texas. The child was killed when she ran into the path of a car in 12300 block of Preston Road at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 1965. Officiating in the service was Maynard Atkins of the Celina Church of Christ. Burial was in Celina Cemetery. Survivors are her parents; two brothers, Graham Stone Stelzer and Morris Lee Stelzer; two sisters, Shirley Sue and Lottie L. Stelzer; her grandparents, Graham Stelzer of Fort Worth, Texas and Mrs. Delma Burns of Dallas, Texas; great-grandparents, Mrs. Fred Stelzer and Mr. and Mrs. Cage Stone of Celina, Texas; and her great-great-grandmother, Mrs. W. M. Stone of Celina, Texas. Accident investigators said the girl wandered away from her playmates onto Preston Road and directly into the path of a car...The girl had been staying with her grandmother, Mrs. Burns at 12230 Preston Road. Police said the driver haled another car, a policeman and then carried the child to Parkland Hospital, but she died en route. (The Celina Record, Celina, Texas, Thursday, April 15, 1965 p. 1) COLLIN CHRONICLES Vol. 38 No. 2: 2017-2018 PAGE 69 Mattie Carr (George) Stephens: Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Celina Church of Christ for Mrs. Mattie Carr Stephens, widow of the late Willie Stephens, who died Tuesday, December 10, 1968, at 9:40 a.m. in a McKinney hospital. Her home was about three miles northeast of Weston, Texas. Officiating in the service was Maynard Atkins. Burial was in Cottage Hill Cemetery, directed by Scott Funeral Home. Born near Weston, February 2, 1893, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom George. She had lived in the Weston Community all her life and was a member of the Celina Church of Christ. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Carl Cawthon, Rt.1, Celina, Texas; one son, Ray Stephens, Rt. 1, Celina; five grand-daughters; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Albert Lee Hays, Wayne Stone, Billy Don Hix, Edgar George, Tom Hendrex and Jack Bilderback.
