
Special Olympics Illinois Fall Games Equestrian Equipment/Attire Checklist ATTIRE/RIDER: • Appropriate English/Western clothing: example: English: approved safety helmet with chin strap, jacket, coat, breeches, jodhpurs, English riding boot with heel. Western: Safety Helmet with chin strap, western shirt, pants with belt, chaps (optional, not allowed in Showmanship at Halter) boots with a heel. • Special orthopedic shoe or boot ok with physicians statement and stated on rider profile sheet. • Agency or Program shirts ok, Polo Style, t-shirts short or long sleeved as long as sponsor logos are not present. Example: (Justin Boots or Smart Pack Supplement, Domino’s Pizza) • Athletes will not be allowed to wear jewelry (pins, earrings, bracelets or necklaces) or awards during competition. Exception for English attire: Stockpin or ratchatcher collar for English shirt will be allowed. Medical necklaces or bracelets should be covered up with shirt or glove or buttoned sleeve. • English/Western gloves, neckties ok • All Competition Numbers are to be displayed on Riders back not on saddle pads. • Spurs ok, whips ok if no longer than ( 1 Meter, 3 ft. 3 1/2inches including the lash) TACK/HORSE: ENGLISH: • Noseband on all horses ( drop/cross/flash ok) they must put on before entering the ring • Dressage saddles ok in English Equitation classes • Adaptive equipment must be declared on the rider profile sheet and rider must wear arm band in competition (seat covers, gait belts). The rider should in no way be strapped to the equipment or horse. • Halters are required for all supported classes. Can be over or under the bridle as long as not interfering with bit or bridle. • Lead line attached to the halter not the bit or bridle in any way. • Rainbow reins, ok as long as attached to appropriate English bit. • Safety Stirrups must be attached to leathers, Peacock,S,Devonshire • Headstalls and saddles must match discipline Prohibited equipment: • Bearing, Side or Running Reins Tie-Downs Martingales • Boots and Bandages except where specifically approved as appropriate for a class (Jumping, Dressage, Reining, Western Riding) Boots may be used only if the horse is always ridden with boots and the owner insists on them. • Blinders, Nose Covers WESTERN: • Safety Stirrups required and attached with a leather keeper: Devonshire, tapadero, breakaway, English style stirrup on western saddle ok with leather keepers as long as it is a safety stirrup, no little dude stirrups that attach to saddle horn. • Standard Western Bit with a max. shank length of 21cm 8 ½ inches. Shank may be fixed or loose. • Mouthpiece or bit should consist of a metal bar 75mm 3/8” to 3cm ¾” in diameter. Can be a straight bar or jointed. • Ports must be no higher than 3 ½ inches. • Hackamores and Bossel’s are ok with use of two hands • Reins must be attached to each shank or snaffle ring not the halter. • Reins can be split, romal, ( English style or rainbow reins only allowed with a snaffle bit and two hands on the reins.) • Chin Straps must be used at all times with a shanked bit • Headstalls and saddles must match discipline Prohibited Equipment: • Mechanical Hackamore, Side Pulls, Halter only without a bridle. • Nose bands, Blinders, Nose covers • Bearing, Side or Running Reins Tie-Downs, Martingales • Boots and Bandages except where specifically approved as appropriate for a class (Jumping, Dressage, Reining, Western Riding) Boots may be used only if the horse is always ridden with boots and the owner insists on them. • Shank chains unless competing in showmanship. Chain is only allowed under chin of horse for Showmanship. All tack/horse equipment should be checked in the mounting area. All Rider attire should be checked in the staging area. .
