I.A.S. Municipal Commissioner Auspicious Message Women friendly cities replicate society's diversity. Gender-based urban development is about promoting cities that respond equally to men and women. Since women experience cities differently, meeting women's needs becomes vital to promoting sustainable and equitable urban development. The Pune Municipal Corporation in the betterment of women's socio economic status in Pune city has prepared the framework for developing women friendly city, incorporating several issues concerning women in urban local government, women from different vulnerable groups, senior citizens, and focussed on selected thematic issues, viz. safety, education, health, culture, transportation, water, sanitation, informal sector and housing which all influence women's everyday lives because of a gender-sensitive perspectives. Acknowledging the limitations of the existing policy, programmes and approaches, the Pune Municipal Corporation entrusted the study of preparation of Women Friendly City Framework to All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), Mumbai to take up a new approach, incorporating women's perspectives and experiences in a broad range of city policy. We have seen that this research for the strengthening of women's position on social, political, cultural and economical platforms as an important step towards developing Women Friendly Pune. With the full participation of all stakeholders together with experts, the women's organisations, the All India Institute of Local Self Government, Mumbai prepared framework for women friendly city, for the Pune Municipal Corporation, covering different aspects related to women and development, education, health, sanitation, work participation, economic participation, political participation and decision making, legislations, and gender budgeting. The report also presents 'Women's Charter' for Pune city which is the envisioning of new principles in context of urban governance, urban services delivery and responsive Municipal Corporation. Several eminent personalities and experts contributed in preparing this important document for Pune city. I am thankful to Adv.
