They were carved from the hillside by the tribes people of Ifugao about 2,000-3,000 years ago. The tribes people dug them out with their bare hands and crude implements. Doing so they created steps in the hills where they could plant their rice. The rice terraces are still used to this day. Reiserute Day 1: Manila - Banaue Day 2: Banaue Day 3: Banaue - Bontoc Day 4: Bontoc - Baguio City Day 5: Baguio City - Manila The Cordillera in northern Luzon is the highest and largest mountain range in the Philippines. The scenery, culture and environment in the Cordillera mountains are very different from other parts of the country. Whilst most of the Philippines is dominated by sandy beaches, small tropical islands and warm weather, the Cordillera mountains have cool weather, alpine vegetation, and stunning rice terraces inhabited by tribal people called Igorots (literally translated as "people from the mountains"). The largest city in the Cordillera mountains is Baguio City – known as the summer capital of the Philippines. Other popular tourist destinations in the region include: Banaue (famous for its ancient rice terraces), Sagada (famous for hanging coffins and burial caves), Bontoc (home to an extensive collection of tribal artifacts in the Museum of Mountain Culture), and Mount Data. Day 1: Manila to Banaue Departure for Banaue, 360kms from Manila. Travel north on the express way and Cagayan Valley Road until the town of Bagabag in Nueva Vizcaya, then climb 1300m above sea level to Banaue. Check in at Banaue Hotel late in the afternoon. Day 2: Banaue From the hotel, board a local jeepney for a ride to Banga-an native village, accessible after a short hike from the main road. After spending some time in the village, continue to a vantage point to view and admire the rice terraces. If placed end to end, the Banaue Rice Terraces will reach halfway around the world. Proceed to the town's public market to mingle with the local people and view the vast array of native handicraft. Time permitting, visit another village before returning to the hotel in the afternoon. The Banaue Rice Terraces of the Philippines have been deemed the 8th wonder of the world. They were carved from the hillside by the tribes people of Ifugao about 2,000-3,000 years ago. The tribes people dug them out with their bare hands and crude implements. Doing so they created steps in the hills where they could plant their rice. The rice terraces are still used to this day. The terraces are considered to be one of the greatest engineering feats of mankind. If each one were connected end to end, then they would reach halfway across the globe or be 10 times as long as the Great Wall of China. It was not until 1995 that the Banaue Rice Terraces were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO Day 3: Banaue to Bontoc Drive north along the winding mountain trail and hinterland town of Bontoc, where the museum founded by the Belgian sisters is visited. A garrison was established in the town. The Anglican Mission dormitories were served as quarters for the officers. Dr. Hillary Clapp was made governor of Mountain Province and during his term, the people were spared from so much suffering from the Japanese colonizers. On January 9, 1945, the American Forces landed in Lingayen and the Japanese forces retreated northwards. In February of the same year, American planes dropped incendiary bombs in Bontoc and bombed again the place the following month. It razed the town so the people fled to the mountains for cover while the Japanese troops arrived daily fleeing towards Aparri and Kiangan to join the troops of General Yamashita. In August 1945, USAFE troops arrived and the people came out from their hiding.Peace came earlier in Bontoc than the rest of the country. On July 4, 1945, the Philippine Republic was born.
