Lionel Palairet. a Clevedon Legend?

Bob Hardcastle Seven wickets in seven balls. A world record? And it happened in Clevedon! Some of you may have read that a young cricketer called Luke Robinson took six wickets in six balls recently. A remarkable feat when most bowlers think themselves lucky to have taken a hat-trick once in their career. So it was with some surprise that I read in a letter in a national newspaper that a certain Lionel Palairet took seven wickets in seven balls while playing for the Rev. Cornish's School in Clevedon. Never having heard of either Lionel Palairet or the Rev. Cornish's School I consulted Jane Lilly about the history and Chris Stone about the cricket. I now understand from Jane that the prep. school was in Walton Lodge on the present top junction of Castle Road and Edgehill Road and the cricket pitch was probably on the right hand side of Castle Road when going up the hill. Chris has also told me that Lionel Palairet (1870–1933) went on to play cricket for Somerset and England. He still holds the record with H. Hewett of the highest opening partnership of 346 runs when playing for Somerset against Yorkshire in 1892. He was also Captain in 1907 and President of Somerset C.C.C.in 1929. Lionel Palairet was educated at Repton School and was by all accounts an excellent all round athlete, footballer and golfer too. His obituary described him as probably “the most beautiful batsman of all time”. The accompanying photograph of Lionel Palairet was taken from “The Jubilee Book of Cricket” by Prince Ranjitsinhji published in 1897 when “action” photographs may not have been possible. https://laurencevlatham.wordpress.com April 2018 .
