Catalogue of Fishes – Discrepancies, Typos, Errors and Queries. List Produced by Dennis Polack Background: From early 2001 I worked very closely with Bill Eschmeyer on his amazing fish database. He provided me with copies of his latest data in Access and I created procedures to find errors and discrepancies. In the more than 10 years that we worked together, I supplied him with lists and reports from which he then updated his live data. Over this period I pointed out many tens of thousands of discrepancies. Bill appointed me as his data analyser. In April 2012 Bill became extremely concerned about errors being introduced into his data and seemed to believe that even though I had never had access to his live data and had only sent lists to him, that I was introducing errors. He believed that he could prevent these errors by not sending me his Access Data anymore. He has subsequently informed me that very few errors are now being created and that the few that are introduced, are quickly found by either himself or a proof reader that works with him. I no longer actively look for errors and discrepancies but continue to encounter some while working on my data base. (My data base is based entirely on Bill’s work and because “Catalogue of Fishes” is such an outstanding piece of work, I use it as my prime source of information) He has indicated that he no longer wants to know about these discrepancies and that he no longer needs my emails. It seems a pity that my input is no longer being used and that Bill is happy to believe that his data base is error free. I decided to make my lists available so that hopefully one of his team or a successor can take advantage of the information and update the data in the Catalaog of Fishes. I am really hoping someone will get rid of the errors as it is distressing to encounter the same errors over and over. There will be some duplicates as I may find them at different times under different circumstances. Duplicates will generally indicate that the error has been around for a period of time. I have different lists of errrors in Access, Excel and Word. At this stage I will only provide the list of those created in Word. This list was started in November 2014. To reduce the number of pages generated, I have reduced the width of the margin to the minimum. This reduced the number of pages from more than 100 to just over 80. Key: Bold red indicates an Error Bold green indicates the correct data Bold black indicates a comment Other Bold colors indicate a query or a comment. On Code recommendation 51D, the anonymous author is listed in square brackets. To avoid confusion Bill also decided to precede the Author with the word Anonymous. Eg.
