Vertebrate Paleontology Curatorial Assistant VOLUNTEER POSITION _________________________________________________________________________________ Burke Department: Geology & Paleontology Supervisor: Geology & Paleontology Collections Manager Term: Fall/Winter 2019 Position Overview: The vertebrate paleontology collection at the Burke Museum houses over 73,000 specimens including fossil mammals, birds, dinosaurs and other reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. Learn more about the collection here: https://www.burkemuseum.org/collections-and-research/geology-and- paleontology/vertebrate-paleontology Each of these specimens made the move from the Old Burke to the New Burke, and now we need volunteers to assist with the inventory and organization of these fossils in their new home. Key Responsibilities: The Vertebrate Paleontology Curatorial Assistant will assist with inventory and organization of vertebrate fossils in the Burke’s paleontology collections. This volunteer will work closely with specimens, verifying their associated data and storage location in the database, physically organizing specimens in drawers, noting missing and loaned specimens, and associating new labels with specimens. The volunteer will work in the publicly-visible paleontology collections workroom. Training and Support: This position reports to the Geology & Paleontology Collections Managers. Task- specific training, including instruction in handling fossils and the use of the paleontology database, will occur during the first shift. New volunteers are required to attend a new volunteer orientation session. Commitment: • A minimum of 3 hours per week, preferably in one shift • A 6-month commitment to this position is preferred Essential Skills and Qualifications: To be successful in this role a volunteer must: • Have an interest in museum collections and/or paleontology • Be meticulous and organized, and have acute attention to detail • Be comfortable working on a computer • Work in a room that is visible to the public Desired Skills and Qualifications: We value the different backgrounds and cultural experiences volunteers may bring to this role: • Background in museum collections, biology, geology and/or paleontology • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and Filemaker Pro or other database management software • Interest in engaging museum visitors and sharing their work in the vertebrate paleontology collections.
