A native of San Diego, Cunningham attended St. Augustine High School where he was a scholastic and athletic standout receiv ing AII-CIF honors in base ball and led the County in scoring during his senior year basketball season. Cunningham attended the University of San Francisco where he again was a baseball and basketball standout, while also making the Presidents' Honor Roll six times and achieved membership in the National Jesuit Honor Socie ty, "Alpha Sigma Nu." He received a B.S. Degree in History as well as general secondary credential. In basketball he was named to the All-Conference and Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-American team's. Baseball cornered him a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In his senior year, Cunningham was USF's "Athlete of the Year." John began his c areer at USO in 1962, with last year seeing him win his 400th game. From 1969 through 1981 the Toreros have compiled ten winning seasons out of twelve. His teams have won thirty or more games five times, first in 1981 ; then back to back in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981. Four of his teams have gone to post-season play-offs; two of the four becoming regional champions and College World Series participants. The 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins. For that performance, Cunningham was named District 8 "Coach of the Year." 1979 was Cunningham's first effort at the Division I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an im pressive 32-19-1 record and a fourth place (14-12) finish in the SCBA. His 1980 Torero team finished the year at 30-25-1 (14-4 SCBA) and, in 1981 USO finished the year 30-25-1 and a fourth place finish in the Conference with a 15-12-1 record. John and his wife Nancy were married in May of 1978. He has a stepson, Geoffrey, age seven. 2 CUNNINGHAM'S COACHING RECORD YEAR WON LOST PCT. 1964 12 19 .387 1965 17 21 .447 1966 20 26 .435 (NCAA Regionals, 0-2) 1957 14 26 .350 1968 13 24 .351 1969 22 17 .564 1970 21 16 .568 1971 34 12 .739 (NCAA Playoffs, 4-2) 1972 20 19 .513 (One Tie) 1973 19 22 .463 1974 23 15 .605 1975 19 20 .487 (One Tie) 1976 26 16 .619 (NCAA Playoffs, 5-3) 1977 24 19 .558 1978 33 22 .600 (NCAA Playoffs, 5-3) 1979 32 19 .615 (One Tie) 1980 30 25 .545 (One Tie) 1981 30 25 .545 (One Tie) CAREER 409 363 .529 (NCAA Playoffs, 9-9) (Five Ties) JOHN GUNTHER Assistant Coach Coach Gunther will be beginning his fourth season as the Toreros pitching coach. John graduated with a degree in sociology from U.C. Santa Barbara, where he played catcher for the Gauchos. He then received his Masters in Physical Edu cation from the University of the Pacific. After one year of semi-pro ball, he spent a few years at various coach ing assignments before be coming pitching coach for two seasons at San Diego State. He then spent four years at Mesa College as an assistant, before coming to USO. John and his wife Diane reside in San Diego with their three sons, Scott (9) , Paul (6) , and Tim (3). 3 OUTLOOK Last season saw the Toreros finish with their best record yet in the Southern California Baseball Association, with 15 wins, 12 losses, and one tie. The University of San Diego has not finished w ith a record below .500 in thei r three years in the SCBA. This year they hope to do even better, but wil I h ave to overcome the loss of several key personnel. Gone are All-League ca tcher Bill Pinkham (drafted in the 2nd round by Toronto), All-League outfielder Bart Brainard, and pitcher/ first baseman/ outfielder Jamie McDonald. A good nucleus returns for Coach Cunningham including sceond baseman and All-League first team member Bruce Tom linson (.323 B.A.), and first baseman Andy Asaro (. 300 B.A.) anchor the right side of the i nfield. John Mullen (.335 B.A.) and Doug Paul (.205 B.A. ) return to bolster the outfield in right and center. Infielders Andre Jacas (. 250 B.A.) and Martin Harris (.300 B.A. before breaking his leg one third of the way into the 1981 season) will be moving to the outfield to take advantage of their speed will compete for the leftfield position. Also returning from last year w ill be catcher Paul Lofgren (.333 B.A. ) and first base man Vince Anthony (.277 B.A. ). Junior college transfers Steve Sciacca and Luke Mai berger will join the catching corps. Fres hmen Paul Van Stone (shortstop) and Laci Nagypal (third base) look li ke probable starters at the left side of the infield. Pitching was not one of the strengths last year, but ve terans Tom Tereschuk (9 wins) and Al Brehm (6 wins) will be back along with a good nucleus of last year's staff and should be improved with the extra year of experience. Eric Gaylord, Kevin Cammall, Glenn Godwin all return, with Scott Williams movi ng to the staff from the outfield. Three freshmen w ill also join the staff inc luding Joe Boyd, John Rule, and Bob Cannady. "We will be competitive, as always, in the Southern California Basebal l Association, and although we are not picked to win the Conference, everyone will have to play ve ry wel l to beat us," said John Cunningham.
