Studied medicine at Adelaide University Design Played first game at Port Adelaide as a result of a players “strike”. Unknown Father was prominent in the area as the Mayor of both Port Adelaide & Semaphore as well as the founder of the Semaphore Bowling Club. Tragically died at the age of 25 after contracting Stan Malin - 1895 typhoid whilst completing studies in Sydney. PORT ADELAIDE SANFL Career: 1898 - 1899 Games: 25 Position Played: Centre / CHF State Games: 1 Club Champion: 1 Jack Mack JACK MACK - 1907 1907 BACKGROUND: Born at Port Adelaide in 1881 he played his junior football at Semaphore Central in 1898-99 before moving onto Portland Imperial (Port Reserves) and debuting with Port Adelaide in 1900. Won 2 Premierships in (1903 / 1910) and served on the PAFC Committee and as a selector. Lived and worked in the Port (wharfie) all his life. Died 1960. Photo courtesy of “The History of the Magarey Medal” - John Woods SAMPSON “SHINE” HOSKING -1910 / 1915 BACKGROUND: Born in 1888 and grew up in Exmouth Street Glanville - the home of the Lord Exmouth Hotel (Monkey House). Played with Semaphore Central between 1904 - 1907 and at the end of his distinguished football career at Port Adelaide he returned to Semaphore Central to play in 1921 and later coach in 1926. As well as his 2 Magarey Medals he Above: Shine Hosking in the th coached 3 premierships with Port Adelaide and a 4 with West Semaphore Central 1906 side Shine Hosking who finished 2nd in the Torrens. SANFL Hall of Fame. Champions of Australia in 1910, 13, 14. premiership. Magarey Medal - 1910 / 15 Shine worked at the Glanville shipyards and passed away in 1974. State: 9 CHARLIE ADAMS -1921 BACKGROUND: Born in 1897 in Queenstown, Charlie was a latecomer to the game only starting to play after he left school with the Port Adelaide Methodist team. He joined Semaphore Central in 1918 playing in the Patriotic Association and immediately came under the attention of the Port Adelaide Football Club. In 1919 he commenced with Port Adelaide and had an immediate impact Charlie Adams winning the Best & Fairest in 1920 again in 1921 as well as a Magarey Medal - 1921 Premiership. CHARLIE ADAMS 1921 Born: 1897 Queenstown Died: 1986 SEMAPHORE CENTRAL Played: 1918-19 Games: 20 (approx.) PORT ADELAIDE SANFL Career: 1919-26 Games: 94 Position Played: Rover, HBF, Follower Premierships: 1 - 1921 Club Champion: 2 - 1920, 1921 Port Adelaide - 1922 State: 1 PETER BAMPTON -1925 BACKGROUND: Peter Bampton was born in 1896 at Largs Bay and played briefly at Ethelton before joining Semaphore Central in 1916. As the war was on in earnest there were few games played, with Semaphore Central playing in the Patriotic League. Peter’s talents were recognised early and at the age of 19 he is immediately elevated to the senior Port Adelaide side. The Bamptons were a very prominent family in Peter Bampton the Port Adelaide area. Peter went onto have a very distinguished Magarey Medal - 1925 career winning premierships, club championships as well as PETER BAMPTON 1925 captaining the club in 1927. Born: 1896 Largs Bay Died: 1968 SEMAPHORE CENTRAL Played: 1917 - 1919 Games: 50 (approx.) PORT ADELAIDE SANFL Career: 1919-1928 Games: 137 Position Played: Defender, Rover Premierships: 1 - 1928 Semaphore Central - 1918 Club Champion: 1 - 1925 The Semaphore Central team played in the Patriotic League in 1918. In respect for their Club Captain: teammates away at war, the team is seen in this photograph attired in suits - not wishing to be 1927 associated with such frivolous pastimes as recreational games. State: 10 ROBERT BERRIMA QUINN -1938 / 45 BACKGROUND: Bobby Quinn was born at Birkenhead in 1915 the son of Jack Quinn a leading Port Adelaide footballer of the 1890’s & 1900’s. He was the sixth of ten children (5 boys) - who all played for Exeter and were all extremely gifted footballers. Bobby played for Exeter in the winning 1932 Premiership before moving to Port Adelaide the following year. He would go onto win 4 PAFC B&F, 2 x Magarey Medals. He came 2nd in 1937 to Harold Hawke - using the 5-3-1 system. Had the 3-2-1 system been used he would have won a third Magarey Medal. BOBBY QUINN 1938 / 45 Born: 1915 Birkenhead Died: 2008 EXETER FOOTBALL CLUB Played: 1929 - 1932 Games: 75 (approx.) PORT ADELAIDE SANFL Career: 1933-47 Games: 239 Position Played: Rover Premierships: 3 - 1936, 37, 39. Club Champion: 4 - 1937, 38, 45, 47. State Captain: 1945-47 Semaphore Central Juniors (Exeter) Premiers 1932 State: 15 DAVE BOYD -1956 BACKGROUND: Dave Boyd was born at Largs Bay and grew up on Mead Street attending Largs Bay Primary School and then Woodville High School. In 1945 as a 16 year old Dave played for the Port Adelaide C Grade side before returning to Semaphore Central in 1946 (PAFC C Grade disbanded) playing a full season at the club. That year the club played finals but were knocked out in the Semi Final. The following year Dave played Dave Boyd Reserves for Port Adelaide and broke into the senior side in 1948. Magarey Medal - 1956 DAVE BOYD 1956 Born: 1929 Largs Bay SEMAPHORE CENTRAL Played: 1946 Games: 20 (approx.) PORT ADELAIDE SANFL Career: 1948-60 Games: 222 Position Played: Centre, Half Forward Premierships: 7 – 1951, 1954-1959. Club Champion: 4 - 1937, 38, 45, 47. State Captain: 1945-47 State: 19 GREG ANDERSON -1986 BACKGROUND: Greg Anderson was born at Cheltenham in 1966 and attended Mt Carmel College, St. Michaels College and Woodville High. In 1978 he came to Largs Reserve playing for Semaphore Central in the Under 12’s in the Port Adelaide Junior Football League Competition winning a premiership in his first year. As a junior Greg was also an outstanding hurdler & triple jumper. Debuted at PAFC at age 17. Father Wally played for Greg Anderson Exeter in 1956.
