Sept. 4: In a communique, the Farabundo Marti Liberation Front (FMLN) said soldiers had captured and then assassinated a rebel radio operator in Las Marias, San Miguel. Sept. 8: According to Radio Venceremos, during the Sept. 1-7 period, rebels caused 175 troop casualties, and destroyed 33 components of the nation's electricity grid and one helicopter. Sept. 9: COPREFA reported one soldier killed, and two soldiers and two rebels wounded at Berlin, Usulutan department. Five soldiers were wounded near San Esteban Catarina, San Vicente department. Next, three rebels were wounded in Jocoaitique, Morazan department. In addition, rebels burned two vehicles carrying iron and barbed wire to Guatemala in Jiquilisco, Usulutan department. Local radio stations reported that rebels occupied the town of Cacaopera, Morazan. Radio Venceremos reported that rebels blocked traffic on the Suchitoto-San Martin highway, near the Cuscatlan-San Salvador departmental border. FMLN spokespersons reported that rebels have caused 219 troop casualties in Chalatenango during the past 17 days. Sept. 10: Military sources reported one soldier and three rebels killed, and two soldiers wounded in clashes at San Jose Las Flores, Chalatenango department, and Cacaopera, Morazan department. Next, eight rebels were killed and nine soldiers wounded near San Jose Guayabal, Cuscatlan department. In addition, two rebels were killed outside Suchitoto, Cuscatlan. According to Radio Farabundo Marti, rebels caused 25 troop casualties in the Suchitoto fighting. Rebel spokespersons reported six troop casualties in rural Chalatenango department. Next, the army suffered nine casualties in clashes at Perquin, Morazan, and Berlin, Usulutan. Sept. 11: According to rebel sources, one guard was killed and another wounded during a rebel attack on a police training academy in Santa Tecla, La Libertad department. Rebels caused four troop casualties near Nejapa, San Salvador department. Sept. 12: Military sources reported that rebels attacked the home of an army officer in San Salvador. No casualties nor material damage were reported. In addition, two rebels and one soldier were killed at San Luis de la Reina, San Miguel department. FMLN spokespersons asserted that troops suffered seven casualties in San Luis de la Reina. Sept. 13: COPREFA reported two soldiers wounded during a rebel attack in northern El Salvador. Sept. 14: According to military sources, FMLN forces commenced a cease-fire throughout the nation. Sept. 15: Radio Farabundo Marti reported 320 troop casualties during the first two weeks of September. The FMLN acknowledged three rebels killed and three wounded during the same period. Next, rebels downed a UH-1H military helicopter, destroyed 37 components of the electricity grid, and damaged three military trucks, one barracks, and two homes belonging to military officers. Rebels also reported the seizure of large quantities of materiel. Sept. 16: According to COPREFA, one soldier was killed and two rebels wounded at Perquin, Morazan. Sept. 19: COPREFA reported one soldier and one civil defense patrol member killed, and seven soldiers and four rebels wounded in clashes in Cuscatlan, Chalatenango, Morazan, and San Miguel departments. FMLN spokespersons reported 11 troop casualties in fighting throughout El Salvador. Sept. 20: According to COPREFA, three rebels and one soldier were killed, and two rebels and five soldiers wounded near San Jose Guayabal, Cuscatlan. Rebel spokespersons also demanded an investigation of the death of rebel combatant Yesenia Roxana Escalante, who they claim was wounded in combat and then assassinated by soldiers near Suchitoto, Cuscatlan. Sept. 23: COPREFA reported six rebels and two soldiers killed, and two rebels and six soldiers wounded near Suchitoto, Cuscatlan. Three rebels were wounded in Chalatenango department, and another two in Torola, Morazan. Sept. 24: Radio Farabundo Marti reported that two soldiers were killed when rebels ambushed an army unit in Chalatenango department. Sept. 25: According to COPREFA, three rebels were killed and three soldiers wounded at El Transito, San Miguel department. Two rebels and one soldier were wounded near Suchitoto, Cuscatlan. Next, one soldier was wounded when rebels occupied the Troncal del Norte highway, north of San Salvador. Sept. 26: Military spokespersons reported two rebels killed and another wounded in fighting at San Jose Las Flores. Two rebels were killed and another wounded during a clash near the town of San Jose Las Flores, Chalatenango. Finally, two rebels were wounded near Chinameca, San Miguel department.
