OUTREACH INITIATIVES The following outreach initiatives were completed by the Station Employment Unit SEU during the reporting period : A. Internship Program - The SEU provides formal internship training to prepare students for employment in the broadcast industry through WAVA Radio University program Radio U. The intern program is extended to college level students who may obtain credit for completion of the program. The Promotions Director, Office Manager, and Inside Sales and Support Representative work with the students in establishing their schedule and internship work responsibilities: 1. During this reporting period, WAVA’s Radio University Internship Program hosted two students. One student majoring in Communications with a focus in Marketing and Public Relations from Liberty University was involved in a Promotions Internship for credit and one student is from Cedarville University majoring in Broadcast Digital Media participated in a Digital Media Marketing Internship for credit. B. Training Program for Higher Level Positions - The SEU provided on-the-job training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills to improve their job performance and that could qualify them for higher level positions. 1. In the Programming Department, two full-time Board Operators under the supervision of the Director of Broadcast Operations and the Program and Creative Services Director learned how to train existing and new employees on the job duties of a station Board Operator and 3 both were promoted to the position of Senior BOC Operator. In their “new” roles, these two Senior BOC Operators are creating training manuals and as well as performing all of the training for new hires. Another Board Operator was trained by the Program Manager and became the station back up for program management. 2. In the Promotions Department, the National Promotions Director trained the Local Promotions Director on the handling of national acquire campaigns, national website management, national event coordination, and station fundraising campaigns. Later, the National Promotions Director transferred to another SEU and the Local Promotions Director was promoted to National Promotions Director. A full-time Receptionist was trained in the duties of the Local Promotions Director to include creating sales presentations and newsletters, managing station co-sponsorship packages and the coordination of station events. After training the full-time Receptionist started working part-time in the promotions department and an additional part-time Receptionist was hired. 3. In the sales department, four Multimedia Marketing Consultants were involved in completing a corporate wide comprehensive 17 part sales training series, created for Salem Media Group, Inc. that included in class viewing of video seminars, with discussion and interaction around the content. This higher level sales training offered these sales team members the opportunity to advance to Senior Multimedia Marketing Consultant. 4. Two women with little or no broadcast experience who were hired as Multimedia Marketing Consultants underwent complete multimedia sales training in broadcast, digital and non- traditional revenue sales. C. Management Training 1. The Salem Director of Human Resources conducts monthly HR Network Training sessions via teleconference and PowerPoint presentations, which includes review of EEO policies and compliance. The SEU’s Office Manager participates in these training sessions each month and then routinely communicates with the SEU’s General Manager and other management team members to keep all employees apprised of the company and SEU’s policy on equal employment. D. Job Banks and Internet Programs : - The SEU participated in job banks and Internet programs designed to provide general information about opportunities in broadcasting and to encourage individuals to consider future employment. Job openings were posted on a variety of web sites to ensure broad and inclusive recruitment.
