Characters are to be believable and real. There are times when the actor actually “becomes” the char- Wedding Soup (Monte Cello) acter. That is, becomes so real that it is hard to the viewer Chicken Florentine Soup (DiPietro’s) to see them as anyone else but THAT character. For exam- Milanese & Meat Ball (Rico’s) ple, to me George C. Scott is Patton, and Julie Andrew is Bread Works Bread Maria von Trapp and no one, except Judy Garland and “Angelic Bakers” maybe Jimmy Durante, should sing Somewhere Over the Rain- bow ever again. For me and perhaps for some other folks, Next Mass and Meal February 23, 2019 the actor becomes the embodiment of the character, alive and well. St. Luke does a similar thing to Jesus. Today’s gospel is a continuation of last Sunday’s story of Jesus in the syna- gogue. You recall that Jesus reads from Isaiah and then Human Trafficking announces his arrival as the fulfillment of those ancient Mary Jo Robbins ~ Director of Social Ministries promises. Jesus first lays out his mission to bring glad tid- ings and so on, and then actually becomes the embodiment The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the of his mission. From that point onward, St. Luke wants us International Union of Superiors General has designated to see Jesus with the evangelist’s minds eye. Jesus becomes February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness his own mission; proclaiming the Good News and bringing against human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. sight to the blind. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold At first the people were amazed at his knowledge but then it into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, occurred to them, he was one of them – a carpenter in their she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to own village! Up to this point in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and seen as Son of God and Son of Mary, and everything is neat comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000. and tidy. Today he announces the “Social Gospel” of taking Locally, there are programs such as Living in Liberty, that care of the poor, freeing the oppressed, and providing care address this issue in the Pittsburgh area. It may be hard to to the blind. The initial relationship with Jesus (Son of God, imagine, but human trafficking (sex and labor trafficking) and Son of Mary) has expanded to the Kingdom. In a way, occurs everywhere. Major sporting events, such as today’s Jesus tells his hometown crowd—”This is what I stand for!” Super Bowl, cause an increase in sex trafficking It is not received well. As 21st century disciples, we have to (prostitution). Labor trafficking occurs when workers are not remain open to the unexpected, for it simply might be the paid sufficiently to maintain an independent life—-not plan of God. enough funds or no funds for housing, transportation, etc. This leaves that worker at the mercy of the employer for food and shelter, and no financial ability to leave and find a better situation. For the past few weeks, all of our choirs were on post-Christmas break which allowed us time to begin moving things around and taking inventory of the music department in each building. It’s been a daunting task of packing up choral libraries, sheet music, song books, old hymnals, portable instruments, music stands and other equipment, while relocating two offices and expanding departmental space from three rooms to five at the St. Teresa campus. Music ministries now has an entire wing off of Schoppol Hall which allows us to house everything together in one location. This will make our offices far more organized as all of our choirs and programs continue to grow. Although we rotate church buildings for various liturgies every week, having a “home base” makes life much easier knowing that all of the books and resources we need are filed in the same place.
