NATION'S #1 POKER TOUR SEPTEMBER 2016 SEPTEMBER 2016 Mid-States Poker Tour PAGE 3 Letter from the Editor SAYING GOODBYE TO BARNETT, HAUGE & ABLA BY CHAD HOLLOWAY This summer, we were saddened to learn of the deaths of three highly respected Vol. 1/No. 5 players, all of who were familiar faces on the MSPT. In June, word reached us that Nick Barnett (1958-2016), a regular cash game President and Publisher player at Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells, passed away after a battle with Bryan Mileski cancer. Barnett was buried with full military honors thanks to his time in the Armed [email protected] Service where he was stationed at Robinson Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany from Editor-in-Chief 1977-1980. Chad Holloway While Barnett wasn't known to most outside his home casino, he was the [email protected] epitome of a recreational poker grinder. We were thrilled when, back in February, Barnett accomplished his long-time goal of playing a MSPT Main Event, which he Event Manager qualified for via a satellite. While Barnett didn't cash the Wisconsin State Poker Eric Anderson Championship, he did say he was happy to muster the strength to compete in a Art Director major tournament. He will be missed. Carolyn Borgen Likewise, the unexpected passing of Matthew Hauge, 26, in July during the [email protected] World Series of Poker hit the entire poker community hard. We here at the MSPT remember the Grimes, Iowa native from his frequent appearances at our Meskwaki Advertising Information Casino stop. It was there he notched two cashes in Season 6, though his best MSPT [email protected] accomplishment happened at Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee when he made a Story Ideas final table, ultimately finishing in 10th place for $5,806. [email protected] Finally, we mourn the passing of poker pro Jonathan Abla, who amassed $253,679 in earnings over his career. The man from Bluffton, South Carolina wasn't a regular Our Mission on the MSPT, but we did enjoy his visits to our bestbet Jacksonville stop. In fact, it MSPT Magazine is a monthly was there that he earned his only MSPT cash, a 15th-place finish in the Regional magazine dedicated to serving Event for $1,752. poker players and gaming facilities Our condolences go out to the family and friends of all of these fine players. through MSPT news, results, tour- nament schedules, player profiles and professional tips.
