ANTIDOTES to the virtue-signaling, violence-encouraging ignorance, arrogance and intellectual thuggery of elitists in U.S. scientific and academic establishments Compiled by Stuart H. Hurlbert San Diego State University, San Diego, California, June 20, 2020 First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. -- Martin Niemöller, WW I German U-boat commander, Lutheran pastor, and, until 1934, supporter of the Third Reich An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody will see it. -- Mahatma Gandhi Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -- D.H. Lawrence We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would harm us. -- George Orwell (apocryphally) The mainstream media, many university administrations, large numbers of politicians on the left and, now, many scientific societies have declared that there is widespread systemic anti-black racism in law enforcement organizations, in academia, and in society in general. This is the most damaging, divisive, fact-deficient narrative being pushed by the illiberal left at this moment in the U.S. Below are links to 63 articles, speeches, interviews, etc. – many (23) by black intellectuals, law enforcement officers, and pundits – that refute that narrative and address related matters. The poisonous, nation-destroying nature of the narrative, when believed by young people and naively trusting voters and politicians, is now all too evident. Every rare instance where a black is injured or killed as a result of bad training or a racist mindset on the part of a particular cop is now treated as justification for revolution, not just by anarchists but by legions of poorly informed, flame-throwing journalists, academics and other kibitzers safe in their well-patrolled castles. I am a scientist. I was prompted to compile this list to counter the mind-numbing avalanche of virtue-signaling, politicized directives now pouring forth from the (administratively) highest levels of the scientific and academic communities. These cabals pretend to be arguing only for racial equality and police reform. But in fact, they purport, illegitimately, to speak on behalf of the entire memberships of their organizations as they endorse principles, writings and political agendas of other organizations and individuals that go well beyond racial equality and police reform. These are out of control palace revolutionaries and their coup is nearly complete. Here, briefly, are some of the suggestions being sent out by scientific society leadership cabals to their memberships: - Donate to Black Lives Matter & Black Lives Collective & Southern Poverty Law Center & Standing Rock Sioux Tribe - Donate to community bail funds for protestors and rioters & fight to end cash bail - Accept the theories of Critical Race Theory, Critical White Studies, White Fragility, & White Privilege - Support #ShutDownAcademia & #ShutDownStem & #Strike4BlackLives - “Dismantle systemic and structural racism in the academic hierarchy” - Defund the police & Decolonize your bookshelf & Search out white implicit bias - Accept the teachings/writings of Howard K. Zinn, Robin DiAngelo, Corinne Shutak, Ta-Nehisi Coates, etc. These are the tip of an iceberg. Individuals are free to advocate for anything they like. But sightless in their ideological bubbles, the leadership cabals, by going so political, are greatly damaging their own credibility and that of science generally. They do this not only in the eyes of the general public (and politicians on appropriations committees) but also in the eyes of the powerless and unconsulted members of their own organizations. Most of these have been cowed into complete silence, just as if they were living in Russia, China, Iran or Turkey. *************************** THE SELECTED ANTIDOTES Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed By Jason Riley, talk at Heritage Foundation, June 23, 2014 Black Lives Matter By Walter Williams, Creators Syndicate, May 6, 2015 Black Lives Matter Protesters Chant 'Pigs In A Blanket, Fry 'Em Like Bacon' WCCO-CBS Minnesota, August 30, 2015 Conservatives, Black Lives Matter, Racism Larry Elder & Dave Rubin on Rubin Report, January 15, 2016 The War on Cops By Heather Mac Donald, Encounter Books, 2016 Sheriff Clarke: Black Lives Matter needs to be marginalized Clarke interviewed by Megan Kelly, FOX News, July 8, 2016 The Demagogues’ War on Cops By Thomas Sowell, National Review, July 12, 2016 Black Lives Matter: Radicals Using Moderates to Help Tear America Apart By David French, National Review, July 11, 2016 Does Black Success Matter?
