WAYNE HUIZENGA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP 2011 – 2012 Student Catalog GRADUATE PROGRAMS Policies and programs set forth herein are effective September 26th, 2011. These policies are in place for the term in which a student begins classes. The regulations and requirements herein, including fees, are necessarily subject to change without notice at any time at the discretion of the Nova Southeastern University administration. It is the student's responsibility to become familiar with the contents of this catalog by accessing the Huizenga School website at www.huizenga.nova.edu and downloading this document. The university recognizes that individual programs require differing time limits for the completion of academic studies leading to a degree. Therefore, the time frame is a matter within the discretion of each academic program. All program/center catalogs, bulletins, and handbooks must carry this information. Nova Southeastern University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools [1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097: Telephone number (404) 679- 4500] to award bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral degrees. George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D. President Nova Southeastern University 2 Dean’s Message The wide range of programs at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship has one common characteristic: they drive value. For our undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, the value takes the form of enhanced skills from highly respected programs. For those who employ our graduates, the value can take the form of improved operations effectiveness as well as an increased revenue stream. In short, our students are prepared to perform and to become increasingly important to the firms who employ them. The Huizenga Business School has a long history of providing value to students in our graduate programs. Whether our graduate students are seeking a degree to increase their opportunity for a promotion with their existing employer or increasing their attractiveness to potential employers, the Huizenga Business School offers programs that add value and help our students achieve their goals. Historically, we have offered a wide range of specialized degree programs (e.g., Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources, International Business and Leadership) as well as an M.B.A. program centered in value creation that has grown to become the largest in Florida. These continue to be successful programs for which the respective markets have responded, and we will continue to provide outstanding products to these markets. We also recognize that demands change and corresponding new markets emerge. Synergy between national trends, requests from students and the expressed desires of major employers with whom we have a relationship led us to develop a series of additional options in our M.B.A. program. A portion of the M.B.A. courses were identified as core classes, and subsequently, our faculty developed a wide range of new concentrations that are designed to prepare Huizenga Business School graduates to deliver more immediate value to the organization. When possible, these concentrations incorporate third-party certification. For example, our new Process Improvement concentration, which is based on Lean Six Sigma, also provides an opportunity for students to achieve ASQ Green Belt certification. Thus, not only will students complete their M.B.A. degree, they will also develop the knowledge to drive Six Sigma Green Belt projects. Regardless of whether a student’s degree motivation is promotion with their present employer or becoming more attractive to a new employer, we are confident our students will recognize and appreciate this added value. To give you an understanding of our commitment to the development of these value-add concentrations, the faculty have developed 15 different concentrations within the M.B.A. program from which our students can choose. Some students have told us they are interested in shorter, value-add selections. As a result, we are also offering all M.B.A. concentrations as separate, freestanding Graduate Certificates. Even though students take only the concentration courses, they are still eligible for third-party certification, if applicable, and may also qualify for financial aid. Students who initially pursue a Graduate Certificate program can later apply those courses toward an M.B.A. degree program. This is an exciting time in the life of the Huizenga Business School. I invite you to take a hard look at the school, our quality faculty and the excellent programs we provide. In the end, I hope you will conclude that we are clearly a value-add institution. D.
