SPAIN: Spanish in the Land of Don Quixote™ For more than a language course, travel to Toledo, Madrid & Salamanca - the perfect setting for a full Spanish experience in Castilla-La Mancha. The information detailed here is typical for what you can expect to experience; however, site visits, activities and service work vary depending upon a number of factors, such as the weather, scheduling and constraints of the locations in Spain. DAY 1: WELCOME TO SPAIN! Welcome to Spain! GLA staff will meet you when you land in Madrid. Together we’ll travel to your Home Base in Toledo. Get settled into your room and start getting to know your fellow travelers. We’ll have our first Spanish welcome dinner together and then gather for a brief orientation. DAY 2: ORIENTATION Today we’ll start off with an orientation and then move in to Spanish placement based on skill level and our first Spanish class! After lunch we’ll get to do an evening activity that is meant to be a fun, engaging way to get to know your group. We’ll have dinner that night at the home base and prepare for tomorrow’s activities. DAYS 3: ALCAZAR LIBRARY AND SWORD MAKING This morning, we’ll start with Spanish class after breakfast. Once we’re finished, you’ll take a trip to the Alcazar Library with a teacher to explain the history of Toledo. Once we’re finished with lunch, we’ll head to Damasquino and a sword maker’s shop to get an insight into the local trades of this beautiful town. We’ll finish up the day with a debrief and an evening activity at the Home Base. DAY 4: EXPLORING TOLEDO We’ll have Spanish class after breakfast, then head out into the city of Toledo to have a scavenger hunt to find some of the most interesting landmarks in the city. After lunch, we’ll have a chance to get up and move in a Flamenco class taught by a local Spanish dancer. We’ll head back to Home Base for dinner and an evening activity. DAY 5: DON QUIXOTE Spanish class once again in the morning! At this point, you’ll really start to get a feel for the flow of traditional Spanish and can try your newfound knowledge out in the community. We’ll pack up our lunch and head out to see the Don Quixote windmill, hiking through the hills that inspired this great work of literature. After the sun starts to go down, we’ll head back to the home base in Toledo and have Mentor Groups for the evening. experienceGLA.com | +1 858-771-0645 | @GLAteens DAY 6: SERVICE AT SCHOOL Today is the first day of service! We’ll spend the morning and a bit of the afternoon volunteering at a school with small children. Play games, teach English, and get to know these wonderful kids! After lunch, we’ll visit the Toledo Cathedral, a structure widely considered to be the magnum opus of High Gothic cathedrals in Spain. Once we’re finished with our tour at the cathedral, we’ll zip across the skyline with some evening ziplining! We’ll finish off the day with a Summer Cinema evening after dinner. DAY 7: SERVICE AT SCHOOL #2 This morning, we’ll head back to school for a second day of service. Now that you’ve gotten to know the children the first day, it’s time to really forge those connections. After lunch, Spanish class will focus on what we’ve learned up to this point and how to push our conversation skills to the next level. In the evening, we’ll hear leyendas de Toledo, or legends of Toledo, from tour leaders and locals to give us an idea of the folklore surrounding Toledo and Spanish culture. DAY 8-9: TRAVEL TO SALAMANCA Today we’ll be traveling to Salamanca, where we’ll spend the next couple of days. In the afternoon, we’ll see what student life is like at the Miguel de Cervantes Historic Center. Each student we present part of the tour. The next morning, we’ll have a treasure hunt around the city with lunch in the Plaza Mayor. After lunch, you have free time to explore the city to your heart’s content. That evening, we’ll travel back to Toledo and have dinner at our home base. DAY 10: FINAL PROJECTS IN TOLEDO After breakfast, we’ll spend our final Spanish class together sharing our final projects with each other. In the evening, we’ll have time to relax in the hamman, or Turkish Baths. Once we’ve had enough time in the water, we’ll go to the market at the center of Toledo for one last shopping excursion before heading to Madrid for the rest of the program. DAY 11: TRAVEL TO MADRID After an early breakfast, we’ll travel to Alto Tagus, a beautiful natural park, to kayak. We’ll spend time out in nature with a picnic before traveling to Madrid for the evening. We’ll spend the night in Madrid, ready for our final few days of the program! DAY 12-13: EXPLORING MADRID We’ll get to relax a little and have a late breakfast after yesterday’s workout. Start the day with a traditional Spanish paella class, in which you’ll make your own tasty food for lunch. In the evening, we’ll visit the Prado Museum or Tour in Bernabeu. The next day, we’ll spend the morning seeing more of Madrid with a start in the Madrid Center Cathedral, pay a visit to the Palacio Real, and see the famous Opera Theater. After lunch, we’ll spend a relaxing afternoon in Retiro park on a small boat or bicycling around the park. In the evening, we’ll have free time and a farewell tapas tour dinner. DAY 14: DEPARTURE Before you even know it, the 14-day discovery journey must come to an end. Head to the airport today with memories and knowledge that will benefit you for life! Staff will assist students with checking in and accompany them until they have safely departed for their gates at Madrid Airport. DAY 15-21: HOMESTAY Not ready to go home? We don’t blame you! Extend your stay and put your Spanish-Language skills into practice. Pack your bags and move into your new family for the one-week homestay add on to this exclusive program. While it’s hard to think how you could top the last two weeks, you may just end up having the best week yet as you live life with the locals and become a part of their family!
