8. What Is a Shofar?

What is a Shofar? The shofar is a special instrument. It is made out of a sheep's horn that has been hollowed out. When somebody blows into the shofar it sounds like a trumpet. On Rosh Hashanah somebody in temple usually blows the shofar many times. Listening to the Shofar is one way Jewish people celebrate Rosh Hashanah. Created for Gateways by Rebecca Redner The person who blows the shofar is sometimes called the Baal Tekiyah. Baal Tekiyah means shofar blower in Hebrew. Created for Gateways by Rebecca Redner There are four different ways to blow the shofar. The Rabbi will tell the Baal Tekiyah how to blow the shofar. When the Rabbi says "Tekiyah," the Baal Tekiyah will blow the shofar once and try to hold the note for two or three seconds. Created for Gateways by Rebecca Redner When the Rabbi says "Shevarim," the Baal Tekiyah will blow the shofar quickly three times. Created for Gateways by Rebecca Redner When the Rabbi says "Teruah," the Baal Tekiyah will blow the shofar nine times very very quickly. It might be hard to hear all nine notes.
