I could barely throw a forehand, five of our best players were going abroad for the fall season, and my co-captain had been playing for about six months longer than I had. I had captained the boys' varsity baseball team in high school, but dealing with an emotional team of girls was not something I had much experience with. To state the obvious, I had no idea what I was doing. I went home from that team meeting and immediately did three things—I bought Ultimate Techniques and Tactics, signed up for summer league, and begged my way onto a local club team. I spent the next three months immersing myself in every form of ultimate I could find. The season that followed was one of the most challenging and rewarding seasons I have ever been a part of.
