U. S. Grant Elementary School Playground Handbook Playground Supervisors: (Teachers, Administrators, Noon Aides) - Establish and execute rules for safe play - Intervene when necessary - Work together to make our school a safe and happy place 1 “The community of Grant Elementary inspires responsible, respectful, scholarly learners to become life-long contributors to society.” The Bear Necessities Learn like crazy Be responsible Be respectful Lead by example Teamwork At Grant School we believe in modeling the behaviors we expect of our students. The basis of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support is that we sincerely care about our students. While helping students learn self-control, respect, and responsibility, our ultimate goal is to maintain the dignity of each child. If a student does something inappropriate, she/he must understand: It is the behavior that was inappropriate, not the child. She/he will be held responsible for her /his behavior. There are other choices that may be made in the same situation that would lead to a more socially acceptable result. Of course, severe problems are sent immediately to the office. The following behaviors are considered severe infractions: Defiance of school authority. Violent or dangerous behavior. Profane or abusive language. Willful damage or destruction of property. NOTE: Students bringing any type of weapon, facsimiles of weapons, or using any ordinary object as a weapon must be sent to the office immediately and face possible expulsion from school. REWARDS FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR To recognize those students who follow playground, cafeteria and campus rules, please utilize our “Grizzly Gold” slips. Grizzly Gold is earned by students exhibiting appropriate behavior and going above and beyond by modeling the 5 Bear Necessities. Grizzly Gold may be exchanged for prizes on a weekly basis. Each ticket will be placed in a drawing at the end of the month. 2 General School Rules Positive Student Behavior Expectations ~Learn Like Crazy~ Be Responsible~ Be Respectful~ Lead By Example~ Teamwork CAFETERIA EXPECTATIONS Line up in ABC order Walk in and out of the cafeteria quietly Be on time to lunch Use good manners: Please, Thank you, Excuse me Keep your hands to yourself Use quiet inside voices Stop, look, and listen Eat the food on your tray or what you brought from home Save visiting for outside Follow the rules and help others do the same Work together to clean up after each other Leave no trace PLAYGROUND EXPECTATIONS Use time wisely: drinks, bathroom, play Learn a new game Follow directions/rules in each area of the playground Use equipment appropriately Share and take turns Keep campus clean Follow the rules and help others do the same Include others in games and activities CELL PHONES/TOYS Students may not bring anything to school which distracts from the learning environment or causes a disruption anywhere on campus. If indoors, duck and cover until the shaking stops and it is safe to move children. Blow the whistle three times; line children up according to fire drill procedures. If outdoors, lie flat on the ground away from hazards until the shaking stops or the all-clear signal is given. Proceed by moving children to the fire drill areas. Fire- Disaster Drill An actual fire will sound an alarm. The bell will signal students to exit building. Supervisors are to direct students to exit closest exit in an orderly and safe manner. Playground Injuries / Illness Students injured on the playground should be sent to the office, with a pass. Injuries include, but are not limited to the following. Any head injury Any blood injury that requires more than a band-aid, e.g. bloody nose Large scrapes Any injury that requires an ice pack The following are situations in which professional judgment should be used in whether or not a student needs further assistance from office staff Upset stomach Not feeling well Side ache Headache Need to call home, use telephone. If students are sent to the office for a NON-MEDICAL reason, please use the blue office pass. Discipline Plan BEHAVIOR RECORD See Appendix II Conflict Resolution Students have three options to resolve conflicts: WALK; TALK; ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS. 1) Walk away from the problem; 2) Talk together with whom they are having a problem until they reach an agreement; 3) Use Rock-paper-Scissors Game. These options work well with disputes over rule infractions. 4 Three Steps to Conflict Resolution: 1. Discussion of who started the conflict. 2. Clarify the incident. 3. End with an apology. Resolution usually comes quickly because students are eager to get back to their games. Having children resolve their own problems frees supervisors to do what they do best….look after the safety of all children on the playground. Supervisor Expectations DURING RECESS . Be Alert - Stay and move through assigned area - Visually scan constantly - Pay close attention to play structures . Behavior Problems - Make eye contact in anticipation of potential problems - Move close to students in event of likely confrontation - Give verbal warning - Bring attention to positive expected behaviors . Be concerned with the safety of all children . If necessary, send child for assistance or use walkie-talkie to call office. AT THE RECESS BELL . Establish and execute a Freeze Bell Procedure.
