On Saturday, just five. A group of engineering buddies from Washington upped the ante at Tenmile Lake’s 13th annual cardboard boat race. Their vessel — a sleek kayak made of duct tape and 45 pounds of refrigerator boxes — dominated the adult contest and soaked all six competitors in the event’s free- for-all division. Curt Marchione, a retired nuclear engineer who grew up in Lakeside and now lives in Port Orchard, Wash.,says he convinced his friends to enter the competi- tion as a light-hearted challenge. After a career tinkering with fission reactors, Marchione now considers himself a convert to the world of cardboard engineering. “The people are a lot more friendly, and it’s not quite as seri- ous if you make a mistake,” he laughed.
